Ten Extra-Base Hits Do the Trick for Cubs at Fitch Park

Dwayne Kemp had three hits (including two triples) and drove in four runs, Chris Weimer slugged three doubles and drove-in three runs, Logan Watkins had three hits and two RBI, and Kevin Soto had three hits and an outfield assist, leading the EXST Cubs to a 12-3 drubbing of the EXST Angels at Fitch Park Field #3 this morning in hot & sunny Mesa.

A native of Rotterdam, Kemp was the second player signed by the Cubs out of the MLB European Baseball Academy (Italian RHP Alessandro Maestri was the first) and was a member of the Team Netherlands provisional roster for the WBC, and like Cubs 2B Mike Fontenot, the 5'8 might-mite really packs some punch. Both of Kempy's triples today were opposite field shots slammed off the right-centerfield fence.

20-year old Venezuelan RHP Robert Hernandez, who is at EXST rehabbing from a sprained ankle suffered in a game at Papago Park the last week of Minor League Camp, pitched two innings today and showed no ill effects. Several of his family and friends were at the game today, and he looks to be about ready to move up to Daytona.

And LHP Chris Siegfried, who was left at Fitch Park at the end of Minor League Camp to work on his mechanics and revamp his delivery, has been promoted to Peoria.

Here is today's abridged box score (Cubs players only):

LINEUP:
1. Logan Watkins, SS: 3-5 (5-3, 2B, 6-3, 1B, 1B - 1 R, 2 RBI)

3a. Alvaro Sosa, C: 0-2 (K, K)
3b. John Contreras, C: 1-2 (1B, FC - 1 R, 1 RBI)
3c. Jose Guevara, PH-C: 0-1 (4-3)
4. Chris Weimer, 1B: 3-4 (6-3, 2B, 2B, 2B - 2 R, 3 RBI)
5. Sean Hoorelbeke, DH #1: 2-4 (2B, 2B, FC, 1-3 - 2 R, 1 RBI)
6. Jericho Jones, LF: 1-3 (2B, 4-3, BB, K - 2 R, 1 RBI)
7. Dwayne Kemp, 2B: 3-4 (3B, 5-3, 3B, 1B - 4 RBI

ERRORS: NONE

CATCHERS DEFENSE:
John Contreras; 0-1 CS

OUTFIELD ASSISTS:
CF Jae Hoon Ha threw out a ruunner 8-5 trying to advance from 1st to 3rd on a single to left-center, and RF Kevin Soto threw out a batter 9-6 trying to stretch a bloop single hit down the RF line into a double.

BASERUNNING ADVENTURES:
Sean Hoorelbeke was thrown out 7-6-5 while inexplicitly trying to stretch a double into a triple with two outs in the 3rd inning, and Dwayne Kemp was thrown out 2-1 with two outs in the 6th while trying to score from third base on a pitch that bounded away from the catcher.

AZ Phil....It looks like these guys wore themselves out running the bases today in that heat. Even though some of these players were disappointed at not being assigned to a team at the break of spring training in March, it looks like they are working very hard at getting out of Mesa. Thanks for your reports and keep them coming !

Thanks, Phil! A question I'd love for you to chew on (out loud, mouth open) for us... Have you seen an appreciable difference in talent at Mesa and in the minors since Wilken and his people took over? And/or with Fleita's leadership? (and how much do people like Hendry, Fleita, and Wilken coordinate their efforts?) I know it's a little early to tell still, and I don't know if it's just because I'm more knowledgeable about the Cubs minor leaguers than I was several years ago, but it seems like there is more talent up and down the farm system than in years past.

Hey Phil - Thanks for the reports. I was wondering if you could post a roster of the players at EST? There are some players who haven't played in the last few games that you have posted that I am wondering if they are in Arizona, have been released, or sent to the Dominican, etc. Also, are any of the injured players close to being ready to be activated by their clubs (Robert Hernandez, etc.)? Thanks!!!

STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.

Natural cycle of baseball. Pitching makes adjustments in approach to counter a hot young rookie. Now it’s time for Busch and his coaches to counter those adjustments. Busch is very good and will figure it out, I think sooner than later.

In 2020, the pandemic year and the year before they acquired Arenado, the Cardinals finished second and were a playoff team. Of the 12 batters with 100 plate appearances, 8 of them were home grown. Every member of the starting rotation (if you include Wainwright) and all but one of the significant relievers were home grown. While there have been a relative handful of very good trades interspersed which have been mentioned, player development had been their predominant pattern for decades - ever since I became an aware fan in the ‘70’s

The Arenado deal was not a deal made out of dire need or desperation. It was a splashy, headline making deal for a perennial playoff team intended to be the one piece that brought the Cardinals from a very good team to a World Series contender. They have continued to wheel and deal and have been in a slide ever since. I stand by my supposition that that deal marked a notable turning point within the organization. They broke what had been a very successful formula for a very long time.

busch is having a really intense k-filled mini slump.  he deserves better after coming back to wrigley after that hot road trip.

i know alzolay isn't having a great time right now, but i trust hector "ball 4" neris even less than alzolay based on what i've seen coming out of their arms.

Neris reminds me of Don “Full Pack” Stanhouse.

Happ, Busch, Dansby and Madrigal have a combined 25 runners left on base through 7 innings, with Busch accounting for 9 of those.  Seems like a lot.

PCA finally gets a hit!  2r HR!!!

They certainly could be coupled. It could also be the case that a team needs good players at the heart of the team and if they are not coming from one source (development) they have to be sought out elsewhere. I don't see the evidence needed to infer the cause.
