And Let the Injury News Begin...

The annual rites of spring injuries has begun with Yu Darvish and Cliff Lee's barking elbows the first major casualties. Then news echoed throughout twitter this morning hat Blue Jays up 'n comer Marcus Stroman would most likely miss the entire season after tearing his ACL doing fielding drills. Once again, bunting proves costly. And now Jacob Turner is making the Cubs 5th starter decision a bit easier:

: Cubs news: Jacob Turner had an MRI. Flexor strain and bone bruise on his pitching elbow. Will be shut down for now

We'll see if the Blue Jays go shopping for a starter, as the Cubs have a surplus, but replacing the likes of Stroman isn't going to happen with a Travis Wood , Edwin Jackson or Felix Doubront. I imagine they'll set their eyes towards Philly first (as will Texas) before they come hat in hand to the Cubs. More likely they'll fill it with internal options as Daniel Norris and Marco Estrada were on the outside looking in at a rotation spot and they weren't even certain top prospect Aaron Sanchez wouldn't begin the season out of the bullpen.

As for today, the game should be on TV somewhere and it's a lineup full of prospects, so enjoy if you have the means.

No Bears news, other than some reports that Cutler is staying and they'll just try and simplify things for him.

BUT....

TE Jimmy Graham/4th round pick to Seahwaks in trade for C MaxUnger/1st round pick

Potential trade of QB S. Bradford to Eagles for QB Nick Foles and maybe some draft picks

and Lions replace Suh with DT Haloti Ngata from Ravens in a trade

and R. Cobb resigned with Packers yesterday

never seen so many NFL trades...kind of awesome.

saw this @ProFootballTalk Per source, Giants S Antrel Rolle will visit the Bears. No deal is in place yet.

WR Eddie Royal signing with Bears though; @NBCdianna: I'm told WR Eddie Royal will be signing with The Chicago Bears. He loves Jay Cutler per sources.

UPDATE: Or not...@DavidHaugh Chargers writer. RT@UTgehlken Report WR Eddie Royal is headed to Bears "not true," league source says. We'll see what develops.

back to baseball

Bad News Cubs playing today behind Travis Wood

Alcantara, Lake and Bryant with throwing errors, Lake & Alcantara let a ball pop fly drop for double.

2014 t.wood showed up today...not a good look. 3ip 7h 4r 2er 0bb 2k had 3 errors behind him...bryant/lake/alcantara

soler solo homer...destroyed it. baez solo homer...destroyed it. back to back...both in almost the same place over the fence. bryant solo homer...destroyed it to right. 3 in row... t.bauer sucks today.

cubs tie! welly HR. so good to have the cubs back on tv even if none of this matters.

Cubs / Indians game being rebroadcast at 5am CT on MLB Network. Then live Cubs / Dodgers at 3 pm CT on MLB Network.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

BAHAHA! I've actually not seen a single fight, but can't wait to see 70 degrees for sure!

next time i roll up into wrigley i'll try to start a fist fight and maybe we'll meet.

be prepared.  i'm gonna make you earn your money.

seriously, though...that's a cool as hell "retirement" assignment.  i imagine it will be better with warmer nights.

I was there for the PCA homer as well. 50 degree baseball is no longer fun when sitting in the shade (knit hats, scarves and gloves are football gear) but I agree it’s one of those really cool moments. I loved the bear hug given by Swanson at home plate and of course the added impact that the PCA homer became a game winner.

In honor of dispatching with the Astros, this painting is titled “The Sweep”.
I retired a couple years ago, and took a job at Wrigley as a security guy. SO cool having Wrigley as your office. SO cool being there when PCA got his first hit.
“The Sweep” happens at the end of every game - the security staff sweeps through the ballpark making sure it’s empty.
(Hopefully I’ll be putting this painting up often this year.)
Lastly, because working for the Cubs, they understandably don’t want you voicing opinions on social, which is why I’m only painting the banners here.

Honorable mention to Jim Bullinger via BleedCubbieBlue:

Bullinger, a converted shortstop, had pitched in three games before he came to the plate. He had entered the game to relieve starter Shawn Boskie after four innings, and came to the plate to lead off the fifth, and hit Rheal Cormier's first pitch over the left-field wall to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead; they eventually won the game 5-2 in 14 innings. Of the 129players to homer in their first MLB at-bat, Bullinger is one of just 32 to hit that blast on the first big-league pitch he saw (including Contreras) and one of just six pitchers to do so.

Most of this activity will lead nowhere, of course, but it is fantastic that they’re looking for talent in every nook and cranny. You never know where that can lead, and virtually nothing is lost if if leads nowhere, as long as no one of superior talent and potential is losing an opportunity.
