Turner Continues Rehab at Riverview, While Denorfia is Leaving on a Jet Plane

Eloy Jimenez (two-run double), Tyler Alamo (RBI double), and Ricardo Marcano (RBI single) stroked consecutive running-scoring hits to highlight a four-run 6th, and LHSP Justin Steele (Cubs 2014 5th round draft pick - George County HS - Lucedale, MS) tossed 5.1 IP of one-run ball (11/2 GO/FO), leading the Eugene Emeralds to a 4-1 victory over the Mesa Cubs in Extended Spring Training intrasquad game action this morning on Field #6 at Mesa CubTown at Riverview Park.

RHP Jacob Turner (on Cubs MLB 60-day DL- right flexor strain) started the game for Mesa and threw 3.2 IP of shutout ball (56 pitches), allowing four hits (all singles) and two walks, with two strikeouts and a 3/4 GO/FO. This will almost certainly be Turner's last EXST rehab outing before he departs for one of the Cubs full-season minor league affiliates, where he will continue his rehab under Article XIX-C.

Turner's fastball velocity sat at 91-92 MPH through his first two innings of work, but then it spiked to 93-94 over his final two frames. He had some command issues at times with his cutter, but his breaking ball was very sharp.

OF Chris Denorfia (on Cubs 15-day DL - hamstring strain) has definitely completed the Arizona portion of his rehab and is en route to AA Tennessee, where he will spend the weekend facing more advanced pitching than he saw at EXST. Then he will (presumably) re- join the Cubs in Detroit on Tuesday.

Originally, Denorfia was supposed to remain at Extend0ed Spring Training through Saturday and then spend the first-half of next week at Tennessee, but the timetable was pushed-up when he got back into playing shape sooner than was expected. In six Cactus League EXST games (24 PA), Denorfia hit 400/500/550, reaching base 12 times in the six games (five singles, three doubles, and four walks). He also struck out five times in the 24 Plate Appearances.

Prior to the intrasquad game, RHRP Neil Ramirez (on Cubs 15-day DL - right shoulder inflammation), RHRP Anthony Carter (on AAA Iowa 7-day DL), and LHSP Rob Zastryzny (on AA Tennessee 7-day DL - foot injury) squared-off in a two-inining "sim" game on Field #5. Ramirez threw two innings (25 pitches - 15 in the first inning, then ten in the second), and Carter and Zastryzny threw one inning a piece (15 pitches each).

woo...be nice to have deno back. hope it's a quick rehab trip. the deno/cog platoon working as expected might be a nice boon to the bat production. it's a small step, but given how the bats are doing lately, small steps matter. plus, if i see d.ross taking RH pinch hit ABs again my brain might explode.

In 28 Cactus League EXST games and exactly 100 PA (does not include intrasquad games), Eloy Jimenez is hitting 297/360/549, and is leading the EXST Cubs in home runs, doubles, triples, slugging, RBI, and runs scored, and has struck out in only 16% of his PA (not too bad for a slugger)...

Phil, we have a question from Twitter: Joey Martarano's numbers look good. Where is he headed?

CT STEVE: Joey Martarano had been playing with Squad "A" (the proto-Eugene squad) until today. He was a DH with Squad "B" (the Mesa squad) in today's game, although that doesn't mean he has been moved-down permanently. The Eugene roster will be set in about ten days, and a lot can happen between now & then.

Martarano hit a tape-measure HR in an intrasquad game last week, and he is hitting .304 in six Cactus League Extended Spring Training games (23 PA), but he also has struck out 11 times in those 23 PA.

I think with Martarano, the Cubs want to keep him interested in baseball by challenging him, and since he did play (briefly) in the AZL last season, the Cubs might want to give him a chance to play in a slightly more advanced league (the Northwest League) this year, even though he might struggle a bit.

Remember, playing pro baseball is sort of a "summer job" for Martarano. He plays D-1 college football and attends college the other ten nonths of the year, and it's hard enough to develop baseball skills when you are playing the sport full-time, but it's really hard to do it when you are playing baseball just two months a year.

BOB R: I don't know what the timetable is, but Neil Ramirez looked great today, His fastball and breaking ball were smokin'.

The big question is how his shoulder feels tomorrow. There have already been a couple of setbacks in the last couple of weeks that delayed his progress, but hopefully it's "full-speed ahead" from this point forward.

Today's Cactus League Extended Spring Training split-squad doubleheader versus Rockies was canceled due to wet grounds, so split-squad doubleheader "sim" games were played on Fields 3 & 4 at Riverview Park, with the pitchers who were scheduled to throw in the Cactus League doubleheader throwing instead in the "sim" games: .RHP Austyn Willis (five innings - 75 pitches), RHP Santiago Rodriguez (four innings - 60 pitches), RHP Dillon Maples (two innings - 30 pitches), RHP Pedro Araujo (two innings - 30 pitches), LHP Sam Wilson (two innings - 30 pitches), and RHP Greyfer Eregua (two innings - 30 pitches).

It rained here last night and into the morning, and "sim" games only need a dry mound and home plate area in order to to be played. And it so happens that those are the only parts of the fields that are covered overnight (infield grass and dirt are not covered).

JACOS: This is the third Cubs Cactus League Extended Spring Training split-squad doubleheader that has been rained-out so far this season. Two were rained-out in May (one at Diamondbacks and one at Rockies), and now one in June. And since rained-out EXST games are not re-scheduled, they are just "lost" games.

White Sox DFA Bailey Horn. I'm thinking the Cubs would love to get him back although they probably won't have a decent chance of claiming him without another swap.

WSox also call up former Cub Rafael Ortega (and additionally Tommy Pham). They are hurting and having a gawd awful April.

    White Sox DFA'd Bailey Horn.

He wasn't producing good results in Charlotte (AAA).

But Jed might bring him back with that open 40man spot. Then try the "sneak him thru waivers" gambit.

    One more thing...

One of the reasons I come to this site...

...in addition to Arizona Phil, who is, as we all know, a treasure trove of well-written fresh information, honest evaluation, and sneaky-subtle humor regarding the entire Cub organization...

... is CubbyBlue and Tim's fantastic and timely visual takes on the Cubs (to be fair, he does have a much broader Chicago-flavored brush well beyond the Cubs).  Thanks for so many memorable images.  I am fortunate to own (one of my prize possessions) a print that I framed (55/200) of "The Last Out" with KB's shit-eating grin as he fields the series winning out of the 2016 WS.

Tim, will you visit me if I do the text security thingy and description: Tim S? Or will I find myself in a Cub detention cell.

i.e. "or send a text message to 773-839-**** with the keyword "Friendly" and include your seat location and a description of your issue.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

next time i roll up into wrigley i'll try to start a fist fight and maybe we'll meet.

be prepared.  i'm gonna make you earn your money.

seriously, though...that's a cool as hell "retirement" assignment.  i imagine it will be better with warmer nights.
