Arrieta beat the Cards (6.2 IP, 2 ER) in his last outing for his second straight win. He is 5-1 with a 2.28 in 7 starts since June 4. The Sox are 13-42 (.310) against him. Ramirez is 5-10; Cabrera has a HR. If he wins, Arrieta will be the first Cubs pitcher to win 10 games before the ASB since Zambrano and Dempster did it in 2008.

Quintana lost against Toronto and the Chicago offense at the Cell on Tuesday (8 IP, 2 ER, 8 Ks, 0 BBs). He is 3-4 with a 4.05 on the road. The Cubs are 3-26 (.115) against him. Teagarden (?) is 2-4 with a HR.

The last time the Cubs won 40 or more games before the break was also in 2008, when they were on their way to 97--whoa! Does anybody remember laughter?

Go Cubs!

arrieta no hitter through 3ip! let's make it interesting...he gets 8.1ip of no hit ball before he's removed over an excessive pitch count. let's go into the break with some needless controversy! wonder how much it's gonna cost to lock arrieta up. at least the cubs have the option to just pay a premium for 1 season if they're not sure about him or his demands are too high.

rizzo HBP for the 19th time. if he's gonna get hit 35+ times a year eventually he's going to fuck up his hands/elbow/wrist hanging his body over the plate so much. it's not like most of his HBP involve taking one in the back. i keep crossing my fingers it doesn't happen.

Thank you Jake - we needed all of that! Mets win again, but post-break they have 10 against the Cards, Nats and Dodgers -- basically, the schedule we already played... Rest up, boys, and come out strong after the break.

47-40 going into the break...all the pitching the team is relying on for a post-season run is healthy (assuming hammel is healthy as they say)...the bats are weak right now, but there's plenty of reason to believe they can turn that around rather than sink...and an already playoff-eligible schwarb is waiting to join up for the stretch, if not earlier. all of that and there's a good chance the club will upgrade some areas via a trade even if it's not a blockbuster trade or a game-breaking upgrade.

Captain Obvious here noting that we saw the REAL ace of the Cubs staff. And to think what they gave up to acquire Jake...stolen!

Nick Cafardo's Cub related stuff from the Boston Globe on Sunday...
4. Chicago Cubs The Cubs need a top starting pitcher, perhaps a big bullpen piece, and a hitter if they’re to legitimately battle for a wild card. They have extra young positional players. They can easily team up with a team looking to give up pitching, both a starter and closer, to make a deal. Getting Hamels and Papelbon would be a coup for Theo Epstein. He’s got the pieces to pull off both. The Cubs match up well with the Mets, the A’s (Gray?), and the White Sox (if Epstein wants to put together an all-prospects package for Sale as he once tried to do for Felix Hernandez when he was Red Sox GM). The Reds are also a fit if Epstein seeks Cueto or Mike Leake.

hamels and papelbon...c.sale (really?)... cafardo gets kicked around a lot, but this is some "out there" stuff...not to mention the SP + pen are the least of the team's worries for weeks. i cant even imagine what it would take to get sale (who's under contract for 4 years at around 12m a year). seriously, bryant alone most likely wouldn't get it done...imagine putting together another package not including him and how much talent that would bleed.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!
