Arrieta started off a bit shaky but eventually settled in on Thursday against the Brewers, going 6 innings and giving up 2 ER. He didn’t factor in the win, but his socks were fab-u-lous. The Pirates are 21-106 (.198) against him. McCutchen is 7-17 (.412).

Happ was acquired from Seattle at the trade deadline to take Burnett’s spot. He had a decent start to the season, then not so much. He went 1-1 with a 7.43 in July. The Cubs are 13-51 (.255) against him. Denorfia is 4-14 with 2 HR. Rizzo is 1-3 with a HR.

Go Cubs!

No Schwarber No Good! /Want to see him hit

I really hope they don't overdo the lefty thing. I get sitting Schwarber vs. tough LH, like Liriano last night, but if they do it too much it becomes a Catch-22: he can't hit lefties because he never gets to hit against lefties.

Erick Leal pitched 9 innings of no hit ball or the South Bend Cubs. 1 BB, 4 K. Unfortunately the Cubs didn't score either so it's into the 10th...

Haha. No his only 'out' today was a fielder's choice where he actually hit a fly ball that dropped in front of the LF and then the LF fired to 3rd to get denorfia with the force. It was a perfect storm but essentially just short of an infield fly rule type play. I'm sure it's happened but I don't remember ever seeing it. Obviously I've seen RF throw people out at 1B .... but can't remember LF throwing someone out at 3B on a clean single.

ATL goes up 3-2 after 7... ...then SF scores 6 runs in the 8th and 9th because screw SF.

08 was awesome. the team was expected to be good and they were awesome. kerry wood finally returned to form, even though it was as a closer. soto showed up in style stealing fuku's thunder even though fuku wasn't a disaster in 08. an awesome early-season pickup of edmonds and late-season pickup of harden. ...then a 2nd season in a row of quick post-season elimination without putting up even a shred of a fight.

CTSteve -- Thanks for keeping this going! It has been so long, I had almost forgotten how much fun a baseball season can be. Ups and downs, twists and turns, cheering and cursing, scoreboard watching...every day. Awesome.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be heard...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Does he have any options left, Phil?

morel in the lineup and playing 3rd.

Richard Lovelady one walk & 20 K, 22 hits but no HR, high ERA, and two-to-one GB to FB in 12.1 IP, so I would guess that's why he got the call. Sort of the exact opposite of Luke Little.

Definitely surprised about Dick Lovelady. He has a phenomenal name but that’s probably the best thing he’s got. I was kinda hoping for Wieck even though he’s apparently still tossing 86 as his heater

wicks 15d DL...cubs select...get ready for this one...richard f'n lovelady.  lovelady's stregnths include being able to throw a ball left handed and that's about it.

    also little optioned, palencia up.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.
