Cubs @ Brewers: Arrieta vs. Pena (Game 160)

The Wrigley faithful head north to watch Jake in his tune-up game.

CHC (94-65): RHP Jake Arrieta (21-6, 1.82)
MIL (68-91): RHP Ariel Pena (2-0, 3.91)
First pitch: 7:10pmCT

Arrieta was perfect through 6 and won in Pittsburgh (7 IP, 0 ER) on Sunday. He’s 1-1 with a 2.70 in his two starts against the Brewers this year, and they are hitting .208 in those games. The loss came on May 2, when he somehow managed to give up 4 ER in 5 innings. Braun, who hasn’t been playing much (no conscience), is 4-10 with a HR. The rest of the line-up probably doesn't even need a bat.

Pena, a 26y/o Dominican, was acquired by the Brewers in the Greinke deal in 2012 and made his major league debut last month. He had a no-decision against the Cards his last time out (5 IP, 3 ER). None of the Cubs have faced him.

Go Cubs!

Comments

"None of the Cubs have faced him." That's been true a lot this year on this bad ass rookie team.

1. Fowler 2. Schwarber 3. Kris Bryant 4. Anthony Rizzo 5. Starlin Castro 6. Miguel Montero 7. Addison Russell 8. Jake Arrieta 9. Tommy La Stella Full WC Lineup? Dress Rehearsal of sorts?

Bryant in LF and Schwarber in RF? OK, I guess, if Jake is pitching -- not many balls get to the OF. Remarkable that Castro has gone from benched to hitting 5th against a RHP.

schwarb doing well in RF could make for an interesting offseason. he's not fast, but he's got good speed for his build. his OF arm seems to be good, but not impressive. if he can cover RF adequately it opens up a lot of possibilities for trade flexibility of other players (aka, soler) this offseason.

Maybe lineup has nothing to do with WC game, but if it did I'm guessing Maddon's analytic guys he keeps referring to determined offense was more important than defense. With how crazy hot Castro has been, I'll take my changces with him at #5 in a do or die game. That worries me less than his defense.

I'd say offense is always more important than defense for the majority of a game but especially with Arietta on the mound who is less reliant on good defense and with Cole on the mound who will be a struggle to get runs against. Once we scratch out a couple then we will start seeing the defensive replacements.

Radio/Ron Coomer said that Schwarber in RF is a test specific to PNC, because in Pittsburgh, RF has less ground to cover than LF. That's why Marte plays LF for the Pirates which is a defense and ground covering decision over Polanco. I think Polanco is generally good but a bit erratic. I really don't know the subtleties between the two although we saw some issues with Polanco during the season at least at Wrigley.

facing the crap pitching of CIN + MIL to end the season isn't exactly a warmup to face g.cole. it's still fun to play these AAA quality teams, though.

Why on earth is Arrieta not bunting with man on 2nd and no-outs. We'll need that in the WC game. Don't get that at all. Happened twice and he grounded to the left side twice.

Bryant now 8-45 (.145) with NO HR and ONE XBH when he plays the outfield. The body of evidence is growing. Please don't put him out there in the playoffs. Joe has his people running numbers and stats -- please look at this one!

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be heard...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Does he have any options left, Phil?

morel in the lineup and playing 3rd.

Richard Lovelady one walk & 20 K, 22 hits but no HR, high ERA, and two-to-one GB to FB in 12.1 IP, so I would guess that's why he got the call. Sort of the exact opposite of Luke Little.

Definitely surprised about Dick Lovelady. He has a phenomenal name but that’s probably the best thing he’s got. I was kinda hoping for Wieck even though he’s apparently still tossing 86 as his heater

wicks 15d DL...cubs select...get ready for this one...richard f'n lovelady.  lovelady's stregnths include being able to throw a ball left handed and that's about it.

    also little optioned, palencia up.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.
