Cubs @ Reds: Hendricks vs Stephenson (Game 162!)

Cubs 7, Reds 4
W: Grimm (2-1); L: Iglesias (3-2); S: Edwards (2)PREVIEW
CHC (102-58): RHP Kyle Hendricks (16-8, 1.99)
CIN (67-92): RHP Robert Stephenson (2-3, 6.27)
First pitch: 2:10pmCST

Hendricks won in Pittsburgh on Monday (6 IP, 0 ER, 5 K, 0 BB). He’s 2-0 with a 1.50 against the Reds this year but 7-6 with a 2.71 on the road. If he has his sub-2.00 ERA intact after 5 innings, expect a quick hook. (If he gives up 2 ER in 5 innings, his ERA would be 2.04, but 1 ER would keep it at 1.99.) For their careers, the Reds are 23-80 (.288) against him. Votto, voted The Man Most Likely to Screw Up Kyle's ERA, is 6-8 with 2 HR.

The rookie Stephenson lost at Wrigley on Sept. 21, giving up 4 ER in 3.2 innings, and he lost in St. Louis his last time out, giving up 5 ER in 4 innings. The Cubs are 8-17 (.471) against him, Zobrist and Baez are 2-2; Fowler is 1-2 with a HR.

The next Cubs game will be on Friday: Lester and probably the line-up we saw yesterday vs. the WC Mets, Giants, or Cardinals.

Go Cubs!

hendricks with a perfect game going through 0.1ip...on pace for 27Ks, too. history in the making going on. all games on mlb.tv are free again today, too.

Man, Addy has left a lot of RBI on base the past few weeks. Too bad -- he had a realistic shot at 100.

lester and hendricks weren't heavy competitors for the CY, but they've effectively ruled that out in their last games. 3 hits, hit batter, bases loaded walk...2 outs and 3 runs in vs hendricks in the 1st. boo. it's his most runs given up since july 26 (3 runs).

heyward with his 2nd double in 2 games off "should have been outs" popups. this reds D is as awesome as their pen.

Down to our last strike of the season. Supporting cast decides to F things up a bit. I like it.

103 is so much better than 102. Also, congrats to Ryno, who's on top of our Predictions Contest: http://bit.ly/2dwuyrW He can't lose, but he can tie. We won't talk about how that could happen.

Good thing I held fire on the "Cubs go out with a whimper rather than a bang" post I was working on. Cubs win 103 games, all in one season. Remarkable. Cards eliminated. I'm sure the Bestest Fans in All Of Baseball will handle it well. On second thought, I don't give a fuck how they handle it. Giants/Mets, Bumgarner vs Syndergaard, I'm hoping for an epic, a classic. 1-0 in 14, complete game for both, don't care who wins.

as much fun as i think a CHC/STL playoff series would be with this season's teams, having STL miss the whole thing on the last game of the season after winning today's game is gold.

Mets vs. Giants

neither team has really hit lights out vs. lefties this year so I'm guessing Lester is for sure starting Game 1. As for the running game, Mets have Jose Reyes who can't get on-base, Giants have Angel Pagan and they did acquire E. Nunez who could give Lester and Ross fits if he gets on-base. Mets were third lowest in MLB in stealing bases, Giants right in the middle at 14th, but E. Nunez (40 steals on the season between Twins and Giants) was a mid-season acquisition.

Pitching-wise

Gsellman has been really good in his 7 starts (44.2 IP, 42 K, 2.42 ERA) and Seth Lugo hasn't been shabby if not more lucky (47 IP as a starter, 2.86 ERA, 29 K)...and of course the ageless wonder Bartolo who would certainly start Game 1. It's possible they'd go 3-man rotation in playoffs of Colon, Gsellman, Syndegaard and then see where they're at in Game 4. Certainly Thor would available for Game 5 even if just a couple of innings.

Giants would go Cueto, Ninja, Bumgarner and then figure it out for Game 4. Maybe this Ty Blach kid gets another chance for Game 4 or they try Suarez or Peavy although Peavy hasn't started since July 30th. Cubs have hit lefties all year, so I suppose they'd have as good a chance as anyone versus Bumgarner, although he shut them out for 7.2 IP on May 22nd and had 10 K's through 6 on Sept 2nd (2 ER).

Final bWAR and fWAR for awards races:

fWAR:

Bryant 8.4, Seager 7.5, Freeman 6.1, J. Turner 5.6, B. Crawford 5.6, D. Murphy 5.5

Syndegaard 6.5, Kershaw 6.5, Fernandez 6.2, Scherzer 5.6, Cueto 5.5, Bumgarner 4.9, Hendricks 4.5, Lester 4.3, Arrieta 3.8

bWAR:

Bryant 7.7, Arenado 6.5, Freeman 6.5, Seager 6.1, Rizzo 5.7....Murphy (4.6 btw and 13th...will probably finish 2nd in vote I bet)

Scherzer 6.2, Cueto 5.6, Kershaw 5.6, Roark 5.5, Martinez 5.4, Lester 5.3, Syngegaard 5.3, Bumgarner 5.0, Hendricks 5.0...Arrieta 3.4 (19th)

Scherzer led NL in wins, IP, K's and WHIP.

from rotowurld "Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports that third base coach Lenny Harris and bullpen coach Reid Cornelius are also being let go. It appears that the relationship between Bonds and manager Don Mattingly might not have been the best, as Craig Mish of SiriusXM hears that the skipper "called out" the hitting coach during a road trip this summer and Bonds' commitment level "dwindled" as the season wore on."

Lester named Pitcher of the Month in September, also won in June. Arrieta won in April, Hendricks in August.

Bryant won player of the month award in August.

Arrieta had a 3-month reign on the award - August 2015, Sept 2015 and April 2016.

@matthewpouliot Most players with 20 HR in MLB history:

  • 2016: 111
  • 1999: 103
  • 2000: 102
  • 2004: 93

@matthewpouliot In 2015, there were 64 players with 20 homers. In 2014, it was 57. This year, 111.

(dan haren)  ‏@ithrow88 @matthewpouliot @CTowersCBS Nice of MLB to hold off on the juiced baseball until the year I retire

with federowicz you dont assume, you know. team fed 2016+. seriously, though. he serves great roles outside of the numbers and what you're not seeing on the field. for instance, his water to gatorade powder ratio and mixing is on point. he can also change everyone's dinner reservations when extra innings break out.

Given Rondon's injury and subsequent struggles, and Strop's Stropy-ness -- the deal for Chapman is looking pretty good right now.

I really hope the weather forecast for Friday/Saturday is wrong -- rainy, cold and wind blowing in (from the north) at 20mph. Not good baseball weather.

from what I can tell and it's not the easiest info to find and decode...

Tichenor seems to have a pretty small strike zone (less K's and more walks than the average ump). For Lester, a guy that lives on the edges, that's a tough match-up. On the other hand, Colon does much the same if they face the Mets.

How to get fired like a boss by Dave Stewart

"Quite frankly, I've got better things to do." - Dave Stewart,

so I don't have cable...

Last year I signed up for Sling TV and was able to watch the playoff games and then cancel my account. That was cool.

Did it again this year, Cubs are on FS1 and Fox fwiw. It's $25 a month...I actually pre-paid for 3 months so I could get  a free ROKU box since mine is rather old, but if you have a newer one or the new Apple TV or happy to watch through your laptop, you should be good with just a month subscription. Only problem is 'effin Game 2 of the NLDS on Saturday. It's being shown exclusively on MLB Network. They're offering a free preview this weekend which is nice, if you actually have cable (http://m.mlb.com/news/article/204829374/mlb-network-free-preview-offere…)...which I do not.

So I believe the options are, find a bar or find a login and try to watch via a cable company portal. Lame.

If you know of another way, let me know.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-2016-national-league-gold-gloves-by-… FanGraphs used a blend of the three main defensive statistics (DRS, UZR, and FRAA) to make some NL Gold Glove Recommendations. Rizzo 1st, Heyward 1st, Arrieta 2nd, Russell 2nd, Bryant 3rd at their respective positions. Perhaps the most amazing part is Baez finishing 2nd at 2nd base despite only 383 innings there. Joe Panik barely edged him out in 1081 innings. In fact, by the weighted defensive ranking they derive, Baez actually graded out as the most valuable defensive non-catcher in the NL this year. Unbelievable accomplishment, Javy.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!
