Williams Perez Cruises at Extended Spring Training

RHSP Williams Perez hurled 6.2 IP of two-hit shut-out ball with seven strikeouts and a 10/3 GO/AO and Edgar Rondon singled, walked twice, stole a base, and scored a run, leading the Eugene Emeralds to a 6-2 victory over the Mesa Cubs in Extended Spring Training intrasquad game action Monday morning on Field #6 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Aramis Ademan drilled an RBI triple and a double for Mesa in a losing cause.

The game was pre-planned as a ten-inning affair, but was called with one out in the top of the 10th once all of the pitchers who were scheduled to throw in the game got their work.

Ex-Boise State LB (and now full-time Cubs 1B) Joe Martarano took pre-game BP on Field #3 and looked pretty good, but he did not play in the game. Six recently-arrived position-players from the Cubs Dominican Academy (Yovanny Cuevas, Fernando Kelli, Fidel Mejia, Christopher Morel, Orian Nunez, and Yonathan Perlaza) did play in the game, however. (Henderson Perez has also arrived at EXST from the Dominican Academy, but he made his U. S. debut serving as one of the bullpen catchers).

Well, I would say Williams Perez is probably ready to move-up to the Iowa starting rotation, except I don't think there is room for him there.

HAGSAG: Several pitchers arrived from the Cubs Dominican Academy over the weekend, too, but I am not sure which ones are here because they're not ready to throw anything but bullpen side-sessions yet, and so they were off doing their own thing on the other side of the complex. I did see Brailyn Marquez and Hector Garcia, however. Supposedly most if not all of the eight DSL pitchers who were at AZ Instructs post-2016 (Carrera, H. Garcia, Guerrero, Colorado, Marquez, Ocampo, Y. Perez, and Ramos) will be at EXST, as well as maybe another one or two.

LHRP Tyler Peitzmeier (Cubs 2015 9th round draft pick - Cal State Fullerton) has officially retired.

"Live" BP at Cubs Extended Spring Training this morning (Tuesday): Jesus Camargo - three innings (45 pitches) Andury Acevedo - one inning (25 pitches) Steve Perakslis - one inning (25 pitches) Juan Carlos Paniagua - one inning (25 pitches)

BRADSBEARD: There are pitchers at Extended Spring Training who are legitimately rehabbing from surgeries (M. Parra, F. Rodriguez, Mullee), but there also a few pitchers who were "left behind" at EXST simply because there wasn't room for them on a full-season affiliate's Opening Day roster and the Cubs didn't want to release them (yet). So some pitchers are stashed at Extended Spring Training until a slot can be found for them with a full-season affiliate. However, while they are not rehabbing from an injury, some of the pitchers who were left behind do actually have a problem that needs to be addressed (like maybe a command or a stamina issue, a mechanical flaw, and/or a dip in velocity), or in some cases the pitcher ran out of time at Minor League Camp trying to get stretched-out as a starter and so he's continuing the process at EXST (like Williams Perez and Bryan Hudson). There are also pitchers who broke camp with a full-season affiliate and then were placed on the affiliate's 7-day DL with some kind of vague soft-tissue injury ("strained calf" is the usual one) that is impossible to prove or disprove, and they are used as a replacement pitcher with that affiliate so that a pitcher doesn't have to be moved back & forth from EXST every time a pitcher at Iowa, Tennessee, Myrtle Beach, or South Bend goes on the DL. This "14th pitcher" remains with the affiliate on the 7-day DL (or Temporarily Inactive List) and is activated whenever he is needed, and then he goes back on the DL or TIL (but remains with the team) until he's needed again. Sometimes pitchers will be rotated into the 14th pitcher slot to keep starting pitchers innings down and to keep the affiliate's pitchers (especially starting pitchers) fresh. There is also usually one position player kept as a "replacement player" with each full-season affiliate (like Carlos Corporan at Iowa and Adonis Paula at Myrtle Beach, and probably eventually Erick Castillo at Tennessee and Vimael Machin at South Bend). These players are placed on the affiliate's 7-day DL with a vague soft-tissue injury but physically remain with the team and are reinstated whenever they are needed to replace an injured player. When they are inactive, these players typically work as first-base coach or bullpen catcher. Again, this is done to avoid having to move players back & forth from EXST to Iowa, Tennessee, Myrtle Beach, or South Bend to replace a position player with a minor injury who will be on the DL for just a few days. However, some players (pitchers and position-players) do get promoted from EXST to a full-season affiliate during the first couple months of he season, usually in the case of multiple injuries on the same team at the same time, a major injury where the injured player is going to be disabled for an extended period of time, or to replace a pitcher or position-player who is struggling. The more-experienced pitchers and position-players left behind at EXST are the replacement guys, and they know that they are the ones who will be considered for promotion if & when a slot becomes available with one of the full-season affiliates. So they pitch & play their hearts out in EXST games. Unfortunately, they are also the guys most likely to get released if they aren't promoted, because there really is no place for them at Eugene or AZL Cubs. So for them, it's South Bend or Myrtle Beach or Tennessee or Iowa... or Bust...

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.
