Minor League Rosters
Rule 5 Draft
Minor League Free-Agents

Cubs @ Nationals: Lester vs. Ross (Game 79)

CHC (39-39): LHP Jon Lester (5-4, 3.83)
WAS (47-31): RHP Joe Ross (4-3, 5.40)
First pitch: 3:05pmCST

Lester won in Miami on Saturday (7 IP, 3 ER, 4 K, 1 BB). Overall, the Nationals are 32-136 (.235) against him. Wieters is 16-47.

Ross beat the Reds his last time out (7 IP, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB). The Cubs are 9-29 (.310) against him. Jay and LaStella are 2-3.

Bryant's ankle may or may not require a DL-stint, but it could be worse. He will have the day off, regardless. We also learned that Montero's mouth is quicker than his arm. Thanks for the memories, Monty.

It’s Montgomery (1-4) against Feldman (6-5) in Cincinnati tomorrow at 6:10pmCST.

Go Cubs!

First inning: give up a run and throw lots of pitches. They really need to come up with a new plan.

candy! 1st HR...and it was useful.

maybe lester should have worked more than 90 pitches... WAS takes the lead in the bottom 7th.

Yet another entry into the "in case you think CJ's a closer" file. Great stuff, but when he's off, he's awful.

RIP almora's candelario's knee (brainfart). 99mph right into the leg. nice. he's "walking it off" but that might sting tomorrow.

!@#!@$@!$@!#! HOLY SHIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!! 3 RUNS WITH 2 OUTS IN THE TOP 9th! CUBS LEAD!

it would be neat, but it would come at a mega-super premium for davis. i dunno if the cubs are down with that for a guy that would probably need a 3+ year deal, too. past 4 years (4th in progress with the cubs) - 1.29era, 0.91whip, 209.2ip, 4hr, 11.8 k/9 i can't imagine a healthy davis continuing on his current track would get less than 13-15m a year.

Yeah I know it's unlikely the Cubs would want to extend that much money and years to him. The situation where I can see it working out though would be if the Cubs get in a groove and repeat as champs. At that point in Davis's career, he will have made $35M and have 2 rings, and maybe he'd be willing to give the Cubs a discount to stay in a place where he knows he will be pitching meaningful innings with a big window for lots of October baseball. I would think something like 3 yr/$36M plus an option for $12M for a 4th year ($3M buyout) might get it done. And seeing how he doesn't rely on his fastball and really knows how to mix and command his pitches, while being limited to around 60 to 70IP per season, I would think he could pitch effectively for at least another 3 years.

no matter what they can afford to snag davis without any harm to ownership or the team's profitability. that said, it's tempered with the fact they need at least 1-2 high/high-ish end SP for 2018 that they'll have to commit $$ to sign and/or trade for. in similar situations, other teams have worked within the means provided by management and/or they've thrown money at their "window" of opportunity. we'll see... it's not like not re-up'ing with davis would be an insult, but theo/jed may or may not have the resources...or they may have the resources...or they can find trade avenues to fill other holes in order to retain davis. woo, front office crap.

As if Blake Treinen blowing the 9th inning lead wasn't bad enough for the Nats, Trea Turner has a fractured right wrist after getting hit by pitch from Pedro Strop in 7th inning of the game.

Wow! In a frustrating year, that was one hell of a win! Great ABs in the 9th. Nats will be desperate for a closer at the deadline (or sooner) -- somebody should be able to get a lot from them in a deal. And the rugby scrum that is the NL Central moves ahead another day.

Prior to Monday's game at Salt River Fields, RHSP Yenrri Rojas threw a one inning (30 pitches) "live" BP on Field #1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, in preparation for what is expected to be his start on ACL Opening Day this coming Saturday morning at ACL Angels. (Although he might not be the best Cubs pitching prospect in Mesa, Y. Rojas has by far been the Cubs most effective pitcher at Extended Spring Training).

The other ACL Cubs pitchers who have been stretched out as SP at Extended Spring Training are RHP Luis Martinez-Gomez, RHP Freilyn Silverio, RHP Wilme Mora, and LHP Miguel Cruz (2023 DSL).

The ACL Cubs bullpen looks to be LHP Branden Noriega, RHP Scarlyn Lebron, RHP Luis A. Reyes, and RHP Fraiman Marte (2023 DSL), and LHP Wilson Cunningham will report to the ACL Cubs when he finishes the Spring Term at the University of Chicago.

Both RHP Eligio Paredes and RHP Mason McGwire are on the Myrtle Beach Development List, so it is unclear right now if they will be assigned to the ACL Cubs or be reinstated at Myrtle Beach.

RHP Mat Peters has been throwing regularly in Cactus League Extended Spring Training games, but he received a PED suspension this past January that will cover the entire 2024 ACL season, so once the ACL season starts on Saturday, the earliest he can return to the mound will be at AZ Instructs (post-ACL) in August.

Among the rehab pitchers currently at Cubs Extended Spring Training, the ones who would appear to be closest to seeing game action are RHP Jaxon Wiggins, RHP Ethan Roberts, RHP Sam Thoresen, RHP Ben Leeper, and RHP JP Wheat. (Wiggins and Roberts threw "live" BP last week, and the others have been throwing bullpen sides on a regular basis once or twice a week).

seiya was spotted doing work with the team pre-game saturday and sunday, but counsell says he's not anywhere near a rehab assigment.

looking a lot like late may return rather than early/mid may return.

steele may return to the bigs after his wednesday AAA start.

hendricks has been throwing off a mound and may get rehab game work later this week.
