Cubs @ Reds: Montgomery vs Feldman (Game 80)

CHC (40-39): LHP Mike Montgomery (1-4, 2.50)
CIN (33-45): RHP Scott Feldman (6-5, 4.07)
First pitch: 6:10pmCST

Just when you’re ready to give up on the season and see what you have queued up in Netflix, the Cubs give a glimpse of what they’re capable of. If splitting the series in Washington was an acceptable outcome--given the pitching matchups, it might have even been the best case scenario--leaving on a high note (despite Montero’s mouth and Bryant’s ankle) is more than acceptable—maybe even more optimal.

Apart from all the times the team has hit .500, there have been an equal or greater amount of times we think they are about to turn the corner and play to their potential. Let’s hope this time is it.

Tonight, we send Mr. Montgomery to the mound. He gave up 3 ER in 6 innings in Miami for a no-decision on Sunday. Overall, the Reds are 4-21 (.190) against him. Duvall is 2-2.

We saw our old buddy Feldman on May 17, when we tagged him for 5 ER in 2.2 innings for the loss. He beat the Nats his last time out (7 IP, 2 ER, 5 K, 2 BB). He has posted a 3.68 ERA in his five June starts. The Cubs are 10-37 (.270) against him. Jay is 2-3.

In injury news, Bryant (right ankle) is day-to-day, and it sounds like a DL stint is not happening. Zobrist (left wrist) started his rehab assignment on Thursday with Double-A Tennessee. Jason Heyward (left hand abrasion) has been hitting in cages and throwing but is not ready. For the Reds, the DLing Cozart (strained right quad) might be activated for Friday’s game.

Tomorrow it’s Butler (4-2) versus that sneaky TBA at 3:10pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Has anyone watched Schwarber in Iowa? The BA and OBP looks okay, but SLG and Strike Outs not so much. I have heard that he might be called up when Iowa goes on its next road trip.

Seen 2 of his 4 games this week. He is not facing a defensive shift which must look like an 8" cup to a golfer when he digs in. Swings from his heels; pulls eveything. More singles here in a week than he had in a month in Chicago. One of 'em was a laser off of the rightfield wall.

Thanks Mike -- that was my sense given a few video clips. Still lots of Ks and still pulling everything. Clearly not working on changing anything.

Yeah, I was confused hearing about his strikeouts and still pull hitting. I think I heard that he had one opposite field hit. So that's not doing anything different than he did in Chicago... which is confusing if they are thinking of bringing him up again soon.

In reply to by Lester's rattl…

I would think most adjustments will take more than a week, against live pitching.* If they recall him, it's probably just because of the big club's needs and not because of anything he's doing differently. Zagunis hasn't demonstrated any value yet. *Although I do see that Schwarber's line drive rate, in a very small sample at AAA, is up.

schwarb homer in iowa. cubs bats in CIN are absent so far in the 5th...

back to .500 3 singles and 2 walks over 5 different batters...totally underwhelming .500 with 80 games on the season in the books. ugg.

Brewers win 3-2, scoring only on two Stephen Voght HRs, so now 2 games back. Almost wondering if its just better for the Brewers to go on a run, so Theo can look long term and see if we cant get back the prospect capital we gave up for Chapman by moving Davis. Instead of limping around to win the division with 85 games or so, trade way too much for a blah SP like Sonny Gray to provide an extra boost in the division and get swept out by the Nats in the NLDS.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

  • crunch (view)

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.

    Amen to that last point!
