the start of 5 evening games in a row...woo.

also, there's a day game on saturday part of a makeup day/night double header.

oh snap...

r.cano suspended 80 games for PEDs.

the PED in question is a diuretic (makes you pee) that's commonly used to mask doping.  so technically he was busted for a chemical that's not a PED, but is commonly used in conjunction with PEDs.  make of that what you will...

here's cano's statement... https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DdQexTQWkAYHQOo.jpg

His statement is interesting to me, especially knowing that he is choosing to not appeal the suspension. If he was truly innocent of PED's I'd think he would be fighting and appealing this to the end, and there would be nothing to be found. On the other hand, if he appealed this, then there seems to stand a chance that "dirty laundry" might get aired and then all would know the truth. I think he's playing his hand in the best way possible.

In reply to by Lester's rattl…

he was well on his way to a HOF career, even if not first ballot i imagine we'll hear about it for from pundits for years once he's eligible that he didn't actually get popped for a PED, but did get popped for something used to cover up PED use and how it should be weighed...

darvish activated, zagnuts sent down

zobrist/bryant/rizzo/contreras/baez/schwarber/almora/russell/darvish

The combo of Darvish, Chatwood and Quintana are killing the bullpen. And Javy - oh boy, that was horrible.

darvish goes 4ip 3h 2bb 5k, 1r/er...61 pitches...didn't know he was on a pitch restriction.

montgomery is doing his best to blow the tie game in the 5th, though.

the cubs have lucked up on some bad calls from the umps, including an odd one at home that looked sure as hell like ATL scored before the tag even though the video replay review team says otherwise.

3 close tag plays for the cubs D...2 of them at home, one at 3rd...and 2 of them that should have been safe for the braves rather than outs for the cubs.

Cubs win despite striking out 15 times.   Some great ABs in the ninth by AA, Addy and Zo.  I have no idea how Russell laid off that 2-2 slider.  It was a perfect pitch. Baez in the 8th, on the other hand...ooof.  First 5 pitches were sliders low and away.  Three takes, two swings, 3-2 count.  The sixth pitch was -- surprise! -- a slider low and away.  Swing and a miss.  Sigh.

Nice W after yesterday's tough ninth-inning BABIP loss.  I realize Happ is Joe's "personal" project...but. how about a little love for Almora and his .359 OBP?

Carl Jr gives up a BOMB to deep center by Acuna and is on the hook for the L ... and ends up getting a W. Fitting for how that game played out.

Dodgers follow up losing 4 straight vs. the Reds at home by....losing to the Marlins at home.  Now 9 under .500.  Trouble in LaLa land.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
