Let's Play Two (Before Lunch)!

The I-Cubs have added some wrinkles to the traditional doubleheader format this year. Call it schedule change brought about by the rising tide of global warming. This IS the Pacific Coast League, remember, and Des Moines IS the city where a game was once played in front of an official attendance of zero due to floodwaters surrounding the ballpark.

Opening Day featured a twinbill in anticipation of inclement weather, not in consequence of it.

Yesterday was getaway day completing a homestand, and when Sunday’s scheduled matinee vs. the El Paso Chihuahuas was rained out, it was only postponed until Monday morning at 9:30 AM. You could almost consider the Plan B an extended rain delay of 20 hours. The makeup began with a preannounced curfew for the double dip of 3:45 PM in accommodation of both teams’ travel itineraries. It was over in plenty of time to shower and grab a sandwich before hitting the road.

After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the 1st of Game One while still yawning and stretching, the I-Cubs rallied to win, 6-5. Dillon Maples saved it with a nearly immaculate 7th inning, fanning the side on 10 pitches. He is, as DP used to say, “en fuego” of late, fanning 11 while walking only one in five June appearances of one inning per. The slider is on the upslide, i.e., a real down-and-out pitch.

Also, Caratini is hitting well since arriving and played 3B in yesterday’s “daycap” after catching (and homering) in the opener.

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 3rd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.

White Sox DFA Bailey Horn. I'm thinking the Cubs would love to get him back although they probably won't have a decent chance of claiming him without another swap.
WSox also call up former Cub Rafael Ortega (and additionally Tommy Pham). They are hurting and having a gawd awful April.

He wasn't producing good results in Charlotte (AAA).
But Jed might bring him back with that open 40man spot. Then try the "sneak him thru waivers" gambit.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.
