Montgomery gave up 3 ER in 5 innings and lost to the Reds on Friday. He’s 1-2 with a 2.09 away from Wrigley this year. Overall, the Giants are 9-41 (.220) against him.
 
Cueto lost to the Cardinals (5 IP, 5 ER) in his first game back from the DL (sprained left ankle). The Cubs are 18-92 (.196) against him. Russell is 3-8.
 
In a matchup for the ages, Chatwood and Richard are on tap for Friday at 9:00pmCST in San Diego.

Giving props - 

...to Kyle Schwarber who has an OPS+ of nearly 130, and an OBP of .377. He *should have 100 RBI by the end of the year, and he has worked REALLY hard to be slightly-below average in LF, as opposed to "Suck-ass".

I love to see people put the time in/hard work, AND show results. He (and of course J-Hey) has so far answered my negativity wanting him traded to an AL team so he can DH, and it must be incredibly challenging to learn a new position completely, while also putting the time in for advanced video review of pitchers, swing development, learning the Chili method, etc.

Good for you Kyle!

I'm amazed when anyone can move from the infield to the outfield (or the much rarer vice versa) at the MLB or even minor league level and even approach average. They are making up for nearly a lifetime of repetitions for a skill that requires you to react quickly. Schwarber deserves a lot of credit for adjusting, and I'm impressed with Happ for also not being completely terrible. Schwarber, like Rizzo, really suffers from the prevalence of the shift. But his on-base skills and power should carry him through it like they are this year. And he's a ton of fun to watch. He's gotten some attitude when he has the chance to throw someone out, too!

The performances of Schwarber, JHey, Baez, Russell, Almora and the pen have offset the injuries to Darvish and KB and the fact that Rizzo's current OPS would be the worst of his career.  Good thing those guys stepped up!

I believe Monty had talked recently about being a bit out of gas or some other words to that effect. All star break coming at the right time for him.

most likely. norwood was the last pitcher available and clearly not much more than a 2-inning guy at best, though. great 1st inning, sketchy control and putting meat over the center of the plate when he got into trouble in the 2nd. it was bound to get ugly one way or another.

What the hell is up with Rizzo?  His inabiity to catch a baseball, twice, cost them the first game, then he leaves 6 on base today and his OPS is now down to .726.  His SLG is under .400.  This from a guy who has received MVP votes the last 4 years.  Is he hurt?  Does he miss Hinske that much? Hopefully, he will hit one of his hot streaks soon, but, for now, he's really hurting the team.

Like Zobrist last year -- he was clearly not right (and said so), but Joe kept running him out there. The play where he didn't beat out the infield hit with the bases loaded -- he was moving remarkably slowly, even for him. Once the ball got by the pitcher, It should have been a hit -- but it wasn't even close. More fodder for the "something's wrong with him" file.

Nico Hoerner bumped up to SB, will start at SS and bat 3rd tonight.  Post an 1.010 OPS in 7 games at Eugene.

2/4, both singles. hoerner/amaya back to back in the lineup (amaya 0/4) if bote gets enough ABs to drop prospect status, both of those guys could be the cubs #1 and #2 prospects (order to be determined). amaya's emerging power this season has been earlier and greater than expected. he's only 19 (barely 19).

Anyone who was reading TCR during Extended Spring Training in 2017 shouldn't be surprised about Amaya's power. Amaya was over-matched at Eugene last season (he skipped AZL), but the power has always been there. It didn't just emerge this season.

yeah, i just think more people were expecting him to grow/show into his production power when he was in his 20s, not be on pace for a 20-ish HR season a few months past age 19. still, some are probably not surprised. he wasn't ranking high on many cubs team-level prospect lists, but he's a looking like a sure thing top-5 team prospect this offseason pending weirdness. speaking of power guys waiting to emerge, nelson velazquez is having a really disappointing season...

I wonder if/hope that the Brewers are hitting a pre-break wall, like the Cubs did in 2016. They have played a lot of games without a day off. Cubs need to take advantage now, because they will be in the same situation post-break.

RHP Luke Farrell was optioned to Iowa on Thursday without a corresponding addition to the 25 (saves the Cubs $2,500 in salary and one day of Farrell's MLB Service Time to go with a 24-man roster on the off-day), so LHRP Brian Duensing could be reinstated from the DL prior to Friday's game at SD (he was actually eligible to be reinstated a couple of days ago, but he was on a Minor League Rsehab Asignment at Tennessee).

    Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

    I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

    My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

    Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually. 

    My roommate became the head coach.

    Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

    He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd. 

    He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

    It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

    Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right. 

    Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

    Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
