BA's minor league transactions this week for the Cubs: Released: RHP Ryan McNeil | 1B Luis Hidalgo | 3B Ramsey Romano | OF Lane Adams | OF Tolly Filotei | OF Daniel Spingola | OF Luis Ubiera

No Baez, no Contreras tonight.  Joe resting his all-stars and sticking it to espn: you wanna mess with our break?  No Javy for you!

Sell the house, sell the kids and head for the hills: Morrow placed on 10 day DL with biceps inflammation

Who got called up in place of Morrow? There's an open roster spot based on the tranactions that have been announced. Norwood back?

Nevermind, MLB transactions page now says that Norwood is back up. Assuming he goes down Monday for Farrell, who would be the 6th starter.

arod tries and gives it the best he can in the booth, but i wouldn't be upset to see him take his billion dollars and go home.

Monty for Matt Harvey.

Look at Harvey's number so far. Pretty solid. He's pitched in the WSeries and in a major market. Joe can handle his off field stuff .

load the bases with 100+ pitches in the 5th and hey, let's let that guy pitch some more

"Cubs pitching coach Jim Hickey said Yu Darvish (elbow, triceps) is still "weeks away" from returning."

neat.

I keep having the same dream -- Cubs fall behind early, an iffy outing from our starter, things don't look too good...then the bats wake up and Jason Heyward is good and Anthon Rizzo is leading off and the Cubs score a bunch of runs and win.  Had it again tonight. Whee!

Eddie Butler with his 5th rehab start for Iowa today: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 1 K -- lowers the ERA to 8.01

Casey Coleman started the 2nd game of the doubleheader: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K -- his ERA now 2.65 in 3 starts

Not on the 40 yet but perhaps Casey gets another shot before Eddie does

Cubs trade LHP Tyler Thomas (7th round pick last year) for Jesse Chavez, who's mediocre at best.

I know nothing about Tyler Thomas, other than he has a great photo on MiLB.com and he's been pitching very well at SB so far: 75IP, 81K, 14BB, 0.96 WHIP and a 2.88 ERA.  22-year old LHP.  Why give him up for a blah reliever?  More moves coming?

This is the most head-scratching move...

Is he a multiple inning guy? Is he a run lower outside of Arlington? A 4.51 career ERA? Steve Wilson is better than that. That is Wade Miller-like. Or Glendon Rusch...

Don’t get it...

Someone splain it to me.

maybe he has killer dance moves and he was brought in to raise the quality of bullpen homer celebrations.

i hold that this theory is just as solid as any other theories.

i mean, he's probably not trash, but giving up even a fringe prospect for him seems like paying high this early in the trade season.

I'm with you.  What need does he fill?  Why part with a 22-year old LHP who is showing some potential for a guy who's "just a guy"?  Good road stats this year...but he was lousy on the road last year.  Something else must be coming -- on the surface, this simply makes no sense.

E-MAN: Although he was used exclusively as a middle-reliever for TEX in 2018, Jesse Chavez is a rubber-armed SP/RP "swing-man" who can spot-start or pitch multiple innings out of the pen. He's very similar to Anthony Bass that way.

As a player acquired in a trade, the Cubs have up to 72 hours to activate Jesse Chavez.

Tactically speaking, the best time to do it would be prior to Game #2 on Saturday, with Chavez replacing either James Norwood or Randy Rosario (whichever one pitches in Game #1). That would essentially give the Cubs two relief pitchers for one roster slot for the doubleheader, in addition to the 26th man (who will also presumably be a pitcher).

As things stand now (barring an injury to another pitcher in the next few days), the Cubs will not be able to carry both James Norwood and Randy Rosario once Chavez is activated, and whichever one survives the Chavez roster move would have to be sent down once Morrow is reinstated in about a week or so.

And (as things stand now) there will be no room on the 25-man roster for Eddie Butler when his Article XIX-C Minor League Rehab Assignment expires on 7/30, unless the Cubs release Brian Duensing.

Of course another trade could change everything...

How about Vic Caratini?  3 hits and a walk.  Not pretty, but effective.  Huge offensive upgrade over Gimenez.

T Thomas has a .222 BAA over the last 3 months. Is a lefty. If trading him for Chavez really will get the team any closer to the WS, ok. But for fucks sake, if it does not, its too much for that guy.

azbobbop: Eddie Butler's 30-day Article XIX-C Minor League Rehab Assignment expires on 7/30 (he must be reinstated from the 60-day by that date), at which point he must be either added back to the Cubs MLB 25-man roster or Designated for Assignment.

If it's a DFA, the Cubs would have seven days to either trade him, release him, or send him outright to the minors (presuming he isn't claimed off waivers). Keep in mind that if Butler were to be sent outright to the minors he does - NOT - have the right to elect free-agency, but he would be a minor league 6YFA post-World Series if he is not added back to an MLB 40-man roster prior to 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the last game of the World Series.

morel in the lineup and playing 3rd.

Richard Lovelady one walk & 20 K, 22 hits but no HR, high ERA, and two-to-one GB to FB in 12.1 IP, so I would guess that's why he got the call. Sort of the exact opposite of Luke Little.

Definitely surprised about Dick Lovelady. He has a phenomenal name but that’s probably the best thing he’s got. I was kinda hoping for Wieck even though he’s apparently still tossing 86 as his heater

wicks 15d DL...cubs select...get ready for this one...richard f'n lovelady.  lovelady's stregnths include being able to throw a ball left handed and that's about it.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

  • crunch (view)

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."
