Brewers @ Cubs: Chacin vs Quintana (Game 118)

MIL (67-54): RHP Jhoulys Chacin (11-4, 3.91)
CHC (68-49): LHP José Quintana (10-8, 4.28)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Quintana gave up 5 ER in 6.1 innings and lost in KC on Wednesday.

He’s 2-0 with a 0.95 in three starts against Milwaukee this season. Overall, they are 41-188 (.218) against him. Moustakas is 12-42 with 3 HR. If the only thing he does consistently this year is beat the Brewers, I’m good with that.

Chacin won against the Padres his last time out (6 IP, 3 ER). He went six scoreless to beat the Cubs on June 13. They are 16-45 (.356) against him. Rizzo is 5-10 with 2 HR.

Hendricks and Guerra tomorrow at 1:20pmCST to end the series.

Go Cubs!

Trending: The post-Matheny Cardinals continue to win without Pham, CMart or Dexter, and the Davey Martinez Nats continue to blow games in the late innings.

And the Jansen-less Dodgers give up 4 in the 9th to blow Kershaw's 2-1 lead and lose again.  NL Wild Card is getting interesting.

Overall, they are 4-188 against him.

Wow -- that is some seriously good pitching!  (Just letting you know that we do read your previews, CTSteve!)

If only. Just this once, I am going to blame the keyboard on my new MacBook Pro--which might take some getting used to.

Such a bizarre season -- inspiring wins followed immediately by lifeless losses.

Assuming this score holds: Cubs will be 13-12 since the break. Six of the wins have been by one run, while an amazing 11 of the 12 losses by 3+ runs.  (Update: the score didn't hold...it got worse).

Time to change the lineup around Joe.

Rizzo and Baez aren't 1-2 hitters. They're 3-4 hitters.

We're 13-12 since the break.

We need to hit.

Bote didn't play at all today. Even for a curtain call at bat. He deserved that while we were down 7 runs. La Stella gets the start today vs a RHer. But, Bote has been hitting RHers.

And, Joe has just killed Almora. He simply must not like him or believe in him. He should/could have been an All Star.

Zobrist leadoff

Heyward 2

Rizzo 3

Baez 4

Happ or Schwarbs 5

Bote or Russell 6  depends on where Baez plays. If prefer Bote for a full week.

Contreras 7

Almora 8

Fully agree.  Having Rizzo and Baez hit in front of good OBP/no power guys makes no sense to me at all.  Seems completely ass-backwards.

And, it's time to get real about LaStella.  He's a very good pinch hitter who can reach first base (via single, walk or catcher's interference) in the late innings, which is nice, but that's his one and only skill.  He has zero HR this year and is SLG .313.  His glove certainly isn't a plus.  I know Joe loves him, but he can't be on the roster next year at the expense of Bote.

today's zobrist ejection was the first of his career.

1,563 games to get his first ejection.

"I basically said, ‘that’s why we want an electronic strike zone.’ That’s what obviously got me tossed. I’m not going to lie...I think he was going toss me anyway, before I said that, just because I wouldn't go away.""

you earned it with a solid jab zobrist, enjoy it.

The Cubs offense is outrageously bad.  Totally inept outside of Rizzo.  100% agree that the lineup construction hasn't helped anyone but Rizzo.

Milwaukee has a fairly light schedule in September so if things stay this way until then, they are in very good shape.  Cards are playing great ball, but have a pretty brutal schedule next few weeks.  If they are able to hang in there, they will have earned it.

That 11 game road trip from hell in September is downright scary now.

Nats about to lose agains to fall to .500.  Sorry, but Davey Martinez should be fired.  If you can't win with that ballculb, you should be fired.

the attitudes/egos/anger in that clubhouse is one hell of a powder keg, and they need someone who can manage the egos as much as fill out a lineup card.

it should have been easier with notorious alpha-asshole jayson werth gone in 2018, but it somehow got worse.  assumed clubhouse "good guys" such as max scherzer have had toxic moments this season while the tempermental strasburg has been leaning too much toward the negative side of his temperment.  bryce harper is still a suck-up shithead...one that will hopefully not infect some other postive clubhouse (like the cubs) with his selfish crap that pits players against each other.

there's a lot of egos that don't like to lose and cannot handle the reality of regularly losing.

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.
