Brewers @ Cubs: Anderson vs Hendricks (Game 145)

MIL (83-63): RHP Chase Anderson (9-7, 3.95)
CHC (84-60): RHP Kyle Hendricks (11-10, 3.71)
First pitch: 7:00pmCST

Hendricks had a no-decision in DC on Thursday (5 IP, 1 ER). He’s 2-0 with a 4.00 ERA in three starts against the Brewers this season. Overall, they are 46-211 (.218) against him. Shaw is 6-21 with 3 HR.

Anderson had a no-decision against the Giants his last time out (5 IP, 2 ER). He’s 4-4 with a 2.89 on the road this year. He’s 1-2 with a 1.35 in three starts against the Cubs this year. For their careers, these Cubs are 37-168 (.220) against him. Zobrist is 9-19 with 3 HR.

Montgomery and Ross in a very-unfortunate make-up game in DC tomorrow at 3:05pmCST--where the weather once again looks iffy, with a 40-50% chance of rain.

Go Cubs!

Comments

Weather in DC looks pretty good for tomorrow.

So, leave Contreras, Rizzo, Murphy, Baez, Bryant, Zobrist and Schwarber here, along with Strop, Cishek, Wilson, Chavez and non-Monty starting pitchers.  Then go win the damn game, Joe.

Old school!  Play 9 innings.

Seriously, the guys who have a back issues (Schwarber, Zobrist, Rizzo) or are coming off injury (Bryant, Murphy) don't need to take 2 flights in 2 days for consecutive day games.  Take Javy and Willson to PH.

Taylor  C, Caratini 1B, TLS 2B, Russell SS, Bote 3B, Gore LF, Almora CF,  Happ RF.

If you play Thursday's inconvenient road game at Washington like they do in Spring Training, the "core" guys who start Wednesday and Friday (Caratini, Rizzo, Murphy, Bryant, Baez, Schwarber, and Zobrist, plus Hendricks the SP Wednesday and Hamels the SP Friday, and Strop, J. Wilson, Chavez, and de la Rosa in the pen) would remain in Chicago and not make the trip, and then the others (Contreras C, T. Davis 1B, Bote, 2B, LaStella 3B, Russell, SS, Gore LF, Almora CF, Happ, RF) start on Thursday with Montgomery the SP and Mills, Garcia, Duensing, Maples, Norwood, Kintzler, Rosario, Edwards, and Cishek in the bullpen and Chatwood the PH and emergency back-up position player (otherwise pitchers would bat for themselves), although Mills, Garcia, Chatwood, Duensing, Maples, and Norwood could also be used out of the pen if needed on Wednesday and/or Friday, and Almora and Happ could also start on Wednesday and/or Friday with Contreras, T. Davis, LaStella, Bote, Russell, and Gore available off the bench on both Wednesday and Friday).

It also might be a cool idea (or maybe I should say a Maddoning idea) to sign bullpen catcher Chad "Moonlight Graham" Noble to a major league contract and have him be the emergency back-up catcher on Thursday, and then outright him to Iowa after the club returns to Chicago (at which point Noble's minor league "split salary" would kick-in), costing the Cubs only about an extra $12,500 in total salary, which would be a nice monetary reward for Noble's work as bullpen catcher over the past few years. The Cubs could transfer Brandon Morrow to the 60-day DL to make room for Noble on the 40 for three days (Thursday plus two more days while he is on waivers), and then Morrow would be eligible to be reinstated from the 60-day DL this coming Sunday (he was placed on the 10-day DL on 7/18).

Milwaukee follows this game with an absolute cake walk schedule (6 PIT, 3 CIN, 3 DET, 3 STL).  If they win tonight they have to be favored to win the division.

The difference between being -4 in the loss column and -2 couldn't be more significant with 17 games left.

Cards lose 4-3 as Carpenter takes a called 3rd strike on a 3-2 count with runners on 2nd and 3rd.  He was looking away, the catcher was set up away, but the pitch was on the inner third and he couldn't pull the trigger.

LA wins. Now LA at STL for 4.  Instinct and division say Go Dodgers, but Cards could put a big dent in LA's playoff chances.  Hmmm.

"Yu Darvish underwent an arthroscopic debridement procedure on his right elbow Wednesday."

a'ite then.

Murphy 2B, Bryant LF, Rizzo 1B, Zobrist RF, Baez 3B, Almora CF, Contreras C, Hendricks P, Russell SS

schwarber has back owies and hopes to return by friday.

morrow is shooting for a return sometime next week.

Brewers doing a good job attacking Murphy high in the zone, he's 0-10 in the series

KB so close to a HR but at least got one back with the double

Little late to make the pitching change, isn't it Joe?  Clearly you need 30+ lefty pitchers on the roster when facing the Brewers.

Edit: Kintzler? Sad.

Duensing and Kintzler need to get on that flight to DC tonight and just stay there (please) for the remainder of the season.

I still hate Jeter for gifting Yellich to the Brewers.

Gotta give the Brewers FO credit for perfecting and building on the modern pitching model -- get 5 out of your starter then unleash your lethal bullpen.  I didn't think it could last all year, but they added to the pen at the deadline.

I can see why baseball is concerned about losing popularity.  Last night's game was of interest to Cub and Brewer fans, but who else wants to watch a parade of bullpen guys strike everybody out in the last 3-4 innings?  If you don't have a rooting interest, it's not very interesting to watch.

I heard Theo on The Score this morning, and he referred again to the "window through 2021".  I can't believe he is going to let this team go into their final 3 years of a championship window (the end of which will coincide with the end of his reign) with Almora and Happ as CFs.

Starting to think Heyward’s injury was highly under rated.

i don’t see how this ends well.  Team is running on fumes and just to many weak spots all year to be a World Series contender.  Maybe they have one more run left in them.

On the plus side, the Cubs still have a 5.5 game lead for the last wildcard spot.  A one game wildcard against the Cardinals would be...ummm...interesting.

Dodgers and Cards for 4 in STL -- Cards can put a real hurt on LA's playoff chances, or LA could move ahead of STL for the 2nd WC spot.  So....who ya got?

As a friend of mine said -- not sure who to root for, but I'll feel a little unclean no matter which team I choose.

Prior to Monday's game at Salt River Fields, RHSP Yenrri Rojas threw a one inning (30 pitches) "live" BP on Field #1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, in preparation for what is expected to be his start on ACL Opening Day this coming Saturday morning at ACL Angels. (Although he might not be the best Cubs pitching prospect in Mesa, Y. Rojas has by far been the Cubs most effective pitcher at Extended Spring Training).

The other ACL Cubs pitchers who have been stretched out as SP at Extended Spring Training are RHP Luis Martinez-Gomez, RHP Freilyn Silverio, RHP Wilme Mora, and LHP Miguel Cruz (2023 DSL).
