Cubs @ Brewers: Quintana vs. Woodruff (Game 7)

CHC (1-5): LHP Jose Qunitana (0-0)
MIL (6-1): RHP Brandon Woodruff (1-0)
First pitch 7:10pmCDT

Last night, the Cubs lost their fifth game in a row, matching their longest losing streak of the previous year on only the 6th game of the season. This series against the division-leading Brewers would be a great time to turn things around.

Quintana made his first appearance in relief of Darvish on March 30. He looked good, allowing 2 unearned runs in 4 innings while striking out 8. Maybe he can pitch a little more to contact today. The team desperately needs to avoid exposing the struggling pen. Lorenzo Cain has 87 at bats against him and has slashed .280/.314/.415. As per the new normal, watch out for NL Player of the Week, Christian Yelich.

Brandon Woodruff, a redhead with a remarkable beard, faced the Cubs 4 times 2017-2018, apparently (2 starts, 2 relief appearances). Nobody has collected more than 5 ABs against him. He has the typical reliever’s repertoire: a fastball he uses 60% of the time, with a slider and a changeup to go with it. The changeup was good last year, but Maddon will probably get Schwarber and Descalso in there anyway.

"Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports that the White Sox had preliminary talks with pitching prospect Dylan Cease's camp during spring training about a contract extension."

damn...they locked up eloy and tried to get cease.

zobrist(RF)/bryant/rizzo/baez/schwarber/contreras/descalso(2nd)/heyward(CF)/Q

looks like we're giving the pitcher-8th thing a rest for a game or 20 or who knows

MIL hitting in the bottom 1st, 2 runs, 32 pitches thrown, 2 errors...

great game so far.  go cubs.

Heyward up, runners on 1st and 2nd, 1 out. He fouls out and I consider it a good outcome versus a 4 6 3 dp.

I’d like to thank the entire Cubs organization for getting the worst/crippling portion of the season out of the way on the early side. And doing it with gusto!

Q is out on the mound taking monster bites of a s**t sandwich wondering when someone else is gonna get a chance to feast

pen hasn't even gotten up.

This has the makings of a stress free viewing summer.

Home opener will be a bit anti climatic if we are 7 games out of first.

Last 4 World Series winners are a combined 7-20 this year.   At least we are in good company.

at least the bats are ready to play major league baseball.

now we need 4 starters and most of a bullpen to join them.

heyward hit a nice HR tonight...also hit a deep one just foul earlier in the night.

that's a nice change from the weak popouts and almost everything else on the ground up the middle.

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 3rd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

    JAXON WIGGINS
    ONE INNING:
    25 pitches (11 strikes)
    no batted balls in play

    six swing & miss
    two fouls
    three called strikes
    14 called balls
    one WP

    ETHAN ROBERTS

wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.

    I’m at the game—woot!

If the streak breaks, it’s not my fault.

25 games played with a -85 run differential.  insane.

White Sox DFA Bailey Horn. I'm thinking the Cubs would love to get him back although they probably won't have a decent chance of claiming him without another swap.

WSox also call up former Cub Rafael Ortega (and additionally Tommy Pham). They are hurting and having a gawd awful April.

    White Sox DFA'd Bailey Horn.

He wasn't producing good results in Charlotte (AAA).

But Jed might bring him back with that open 40man spot. Then try the "sneak him thru waivers" gambit.

Oh my, now I will have nightmares of me sitting in the bowels of the Wrigley security detention cell.

    One more thing...

One of the reasons I come to this site...

...in addition to Arizona Phil, who is, as we all know, a treasure trove of well-written fresh information, honest evaluation, and sneaky-subtle humor regarding the entire Cub organization...

... is CubbyBlue and Tim's fantastic and timely visual takes on the Cubs (to be fair, he does have a much broader Chicago-flavored brush well beyond the Cubs).  Thanks for so many memorable images.  I am fortunate to own (one of my prize possessions) a print that I framed (55/200) of "The Last Out" with KB's shit-eating grin as he fields the series winning out of the 2016 WS.

Tim, will you visit me if I do the text security thingy and description: Tim S? Or will I find myself in a Cub detention cell.

i.e. "or send a text message to 773-839-**** with the keyword "Friendly" and include your seat location and a description of your issue.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.
