Three in Third Just Enough for Cubs at Salt River Fields

Taking advantage of three walks, three errors (all three on pick-off attempts), two balks, and a WP, the Cubs "B" Team plated three gift runs in the top of the 3rd and then hung-on to edge the Rockies 3-2 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Monday morning on Dust Storm Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.

The Cubs managed only four hits in the game, although Yovanny Cuevas did reach base three times (two walks and a single) and scored a run, Rochest Cruz walked, tripled, and scored a run, and Brandon Vicens doubled and scored a run.

Rochest Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz.

He was fun to follow through the DSL last season.

TIM: If you've never seen him, Rochest Cruz is a wiry and - VERY - fast second-baseman who looks like he's about 12 years old.

He takes a lot of pitches and has a sort of slashing approach at the plate when he does swing (he pulled the 5th inning triple into the RF corner and it could have been an inside-the-park HR if the third base coach hadn't stopped him at 3rd because there was only one out).

He is a very unusual player. Kind of like Fernando Kelli on uppers.

For example, he drew a walk in the 3rd inning on a 3-2 pitch and then personally caused a balk that got him to second, and then he enticed a pick-off attempt at 2nd that resulted in an errant throw that got him to 3rd, before scoring on a FC. It was like a death by a thousand cuts slow-motion little league HR.

Best comp is a juvenile Thomson's Gazelle on the African savannah.

He had no trouble logging SBs last summer, per the game logs. If he can hit a little bit.........

"Best comp is a juvenile Thomson's Gazelle on the African savannah."

It's better to be the cheetah in that scenario.

As long as you're one of the faster gazelles, it's probably ok!

VA PHIL: It's not better to be a cheetah if you end up with a suspension that keeps you off the savannah for 80 games.

(Phil, we're from Chicago. We don't say it like that.)

Hey Phil, I saw where the Cubs recently traded for some additional international pool money. Have they made any recent signings of note?

Even worse for StL. 7 vs Cubs, 3 vs Nationals

The fate of Cubs and Cardinals season is going to come down to 7 games against one another. Cubs gotta win 5 if they want to win division I think. Good thing 4 of 7 are at Wrigley.

13 games left for CHC...7 vs STL

13 games left for MIL...all vs teams under .500 (SD, PIT, CIN, COL)

buckle up...it's gonna be a "fun" couple of weeks.

The way MIL is playing makes me... uneasy. Too bad we didn’t bury them. Especially because they won’t play anyone with a winning record from here on out.

That said, much as I LOATHE the team and fans at Wrigley North, I’d still rather see them take the division than the shitbirds.

bote really needs to overcome his weird habbit of trying to duck under high/inside pitches rather than leaning out of them.

47 cubs runs in this 3 game series...14 HRs.

STL up by 1...MIL with 2 outs, bases loaded, top 9th.

r.braun grand slam.  MIL leads by 3.

barring some crazy comebacks, STL's lead should shrink to 2 games.

zobrist or heyward missing a base...probably heyward, but it wasn't clear from the cubs broadcast.  kemp scored on the screwed up appeal throw.

I guess that Kemp missed a base? I really don’t know.

    Wtf were Bucs appealing?

PIT is playing some embarrasingly horrible baseball.

giving up a run throwing away a ball on an appeal toss to 3rd is new territory for awful.

    Q is so GD mediocre

  • crunch 21 hours 50 min ago (view)

...and Q shits the bed in the 3rd as PIT takes the lead without an out being recorded.

    rizzo just f'd his ankle.

    sigh.

rolled pretty badly planting his foot going after a ball.  he's rolling around on the ground and not getting up.

One 2 women umps in MiLB worked the SB series. Pal of our son’s from LL days was SB clubhouse mgr. this year. He spoke highly of Emma’s work but said visiting teams often did not. Also spoke highly of B-Zo on his brief rehab stay when he bought the team McD’s, a la Prez Dollar Menu. So, 2 Cub branches made playoffs so far. Can the big Cubs make it 3?

South Bend won seven post-season games.  No team they played won any against them.  So the Midwest League Cubs run the table and win the Championship!  A couple recurring offensive stars, solid defense and lots of strong pitching did the trick.
