Sierra Salami Too Much for Giants to Swallow

Jonathan Sierra slugged a grand slam HR and walked and scored, and Ismael Mena drilled a two-run double, walked twice, and scored a run, leading the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs' Lo-A affiliate) to a 10-5 drubbing of the San Jose Giants (Lo-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants) in Cactus League Minor League Camp game action Thursday afternoon on Field #6 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Victor Bericoto belted a two-run triple and scored a run for the Giants in a losing cause.

The game was pre-planned as a seven-inning affair.

There was only one home game on the Riverview backfields on Thursday, because South Bend played Eugene in the stadium (Sloan Park).

KKvG: Richard Gallardo FB: 93-96 / CV 79 ... threw strikes, and other than the careless unnecessary throwing error that never should have happened, he had a good, easy day on the mound... threw an additional 20 pitches in the bullpen after he completed his two innings of work so that he can be stretched out to throw at least three or possibly even four innings next time out.

cubs going hard with the lineup today (friday), first "stacked" lineup of spring

fraizer, suzuki (RF), happ, contreras, heyward, villar, madrigal, hoerner, rivas (schwindel has hurt back)

wicks 15d DL...cubs select...get ready for this one...richard f'n lovelady.  lovelady's stregnths include being able to throw a ball left handed and that's about it.

    also little optioned, palencia up.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.
