Cubs @ Atlanta: Series Thread (Games 17-19)

The Cubs (7-9) dropped 3 of 4 to the Pirates despite outscoring their opponents 29 to 12. The sandwiched a blowout between three close losses. They begin a 6-game road trip with three games the reigning World Series Champions. Atlanta enters the series at 7-10. See below for daily matchups.

Game 17, Tuesday, April 26, 6:20 pm central

CHC: RHP Marcus Stroman (0-2, 8.78 ERA)

ATL: LHP Max Fried (1-2, 3.50 ERA)

Stroman had a solid debut for the Cubs but has performed poorly in two starts since then, allowing 12 earned runs in 8.1 innings. He's collected more than a strikeout per inning but would benefit from more soft contact.

Fried has been in full command through three starts, issuing only one walk in 18 innings pitched compared to 17 strikeouts. He won his last start on the back of seven scoreless innings.

Game 18, Wednesday, April 27, 6:20 pm central

CHC: RHP Mark Leiter Jr. (0-1, 11.05 ERA)

ATL: RHP Charlie Morton (1-2, 6.32 ERA)

Leiter bounced back slightly in his second start, allowing two earned runs in four innings. His time in the rotation is likely limited, but he might be able to win some bullpen time.with a solid showing.

Morton is looking to follow up a great first season with Atlanta but has been stung by the homerun ball in the early going. Cubs fans saw the most of him during the first act of his career, when he was a pitch-to-contact Pirate. He since reinvented himself with Houston and really hit his stride in 2019 pitching for the Rays.

Game 19, Thursday, April 28, 6:20 pm central

CHC: LHP Drew Smyly (1-1, 2.45 ERA)

ATL: RHP Kyle Wright (2-0, 1.06 ERA)

Smyly has acquitted himself admirably in his first three starts and is making a bid to stick around in the rotation even when the Cubs welcome back some injured starters. Last time out he did surrender four earned runs in a loss to the Pirates.

26-year-old righty, Kyle Wright, has spent parts of the last three seasons in the majors with Atlanta. His fastball sits mid-90s, but spotty control and vulnerability to the longball have both held him back. He's had a hot start to 2022, punching out 26 opposing hitters in 17 innings pitched while walking only two and allowing zero homeruns thus far.

1ip 0h 0bb 3k speaks for itself, but e.roberts looked as sharp as the results.

burl carraway has pitched 4 games in AA, 3.2 IP...he's walked 3 guys in 3 of 4 outings and 1 in the other.  ow.

a.mills shut down for at least a week because of tightness in his right quad while working out.

ball straight up dieing this season many feet short of the wall.  it's not like they're banging off the top barely missing, but it seems a good amount of stuff that would be out in years past is falling 10+ feet from the fence for a popout.

leiter done after (2ip 2h 1bb 0k, 0r/er, 45 pitches).

thompson in.

would not highly protest thompson taking leiter's spot...

acuna rejoins the braves...boo.  he's supposedly starting in RF tonight.

i mean, welcome back and all, but friday would have a great time to rejoin the team.

is there a manager in the game that removes a starter after 4.1 or 4.2 innings more than d.ross...or even close?

it makes sense sometimes, but it seems to happen a lot.

Very well played game all around tonight.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?

The level of conversation on this site is intelligent, reasoned and informative. Miles ahead of other Cub sites.

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

    JAXON WIGGINS
    ONE INNING:
    25 pitches (11 strikes)
    no batted balls in play
two walks (Suriel and J. Diaz)

    two fouls
    three called strikes

Mat Peters was bumped by Justin Steele from his scheduled game work at Giants, so he threw two innings of "live" BP with Wiggins & Roberts.

wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.
