Luis Stars with Bat and Zapata Leads with Arm at Salt River Fields

Jansel Luis hammered two RBI doubles and scored two runs, Ricardo Caldera tripled, walked and scored two runs, and SP Deyer Zapata fired four innings of one-hit shutout ball, helping the Diamondbacks Black squad defeat the Cubs 6-4 in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Monday morning on Whirlwind Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick (located in the Salt River Maricopa-Pima Indian Community, east of Scottsdale, AZ).

Ed Howard reached base four times (singled in the 1st, walked in the 3rd, singled again in the 5th, and laced an oppo-field RBI double into the RF corner in the 7th), Ismael Mena singled, doubled, and scored two runs, Adan Sanchez drilled two singles (including a line-drive two-run single in the 5th that put the Cubs up 2-1) and threw out two baserunners attempting to steal, and SP Eligio Paredes hurled three innings of one hit / one run ball (run was unearned) for the Cubs.

In 13 Cactus League EXST games (33 PA), Ed Howard is now hitting 404/515/704 (1.219 OPS - 300 ISO).

RHP Daniel Palencia stepped out of the pitch lab long enough to accompany the team to Salt River Fields and throw a quick 1-2-3 inning (P-6, L-8, and a K-looking) that took about three minutes and featured four 100 MPH FB.

PHIL: How does Sanchez look behind the plate receiving? Any thoughts (or overheard comments) on his likelihood of staying at catcher?

Thanks!

Very well played game all around tonight.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.

    I’m at the game—woot!

If the streak breaks, it’s not my fault.
