Imanaga & Wicks Bank 21 Strikeouts on the Backfields

Shota Imanaga threw 5.1 IP of one-run ball with 13 strikeouts (eight swinging) and Ed Howard singled twice, stole a base, scored a run, and drove-in two more, as the South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs Hi-A affiliate) edged the Eugene Emeralds (San Francisco Giants Hi-A affiliate) 3-2 on Field # 6, and Jordan Wicks hurled six innings of two hit / no run ball with eight strikeouts (all eight swinging) and combined with two relievers on a five-hit shutout, as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs Lo-A affiliate) blanked the San Jose Giants (Lo-A affiliate of the Giants) 4-0 on Field # 5, in Cactus League Minor League Spring Training game action Wednesday afternoon at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Along with the 13 punchouts, Imanaga also walked two, hit a batter, threw a wild pitch, and surrendered five hits, including a towering solo HR by 19-year old 6'7 LH-hitting first-baseman (former RHP) Bryce Eldridge (Giants 2023 1st round pick) on a 1-0 pitch with two outs in the top of the 1st inning that landed way beyond the RF fence and on the roof of the enclosed batting cages located due east of Field # 6.

Imanaga and Wicks brought an entourage with them from big league camp that included two experienced catchers (Joe Hudson and Bryce Windham), pitching coach Tommy Hottovy, an MLB trainer, a translator (for Imanaga, not for Wicks), chauffeured golf carts, and a media liaison person (also for Imanaga).

The Ohtani/Interpreter gambling thing is starting to smell pretty bad. Changing stories, evasive answers, law enforcement investigations, accusations and finger pointing as the numbers involved start to grow. It’s obviously VERY early, but it feels like the seeds of Hollywood Dodgers 2024 buyer’s remorse are already in place.

ESPN is covering all of this pretty well.

Agreed on all counts. This has the feel of the start of something that could get much, much worse.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
