Two Cubs Squads Get Bounced at Fitch Park

Nathan Nankil drove-in five runs with a two-run double and a three-run HR, Pedro Pineda clubbed an RBI double, walked, and scored two runs, Nick Schwartz drilled an RBI single, walked twice (one of the walks forced-in a run), and scored two runs. Robert Puason hammered an RBI double, and SP Jackson Finley hurled four innings of one-hit shutout ball, as the Stockton Ports (Oakland Athletics Lo-A affiliate) trounced the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Chicago Cubs Lo-A affiliate) 10-2 on Field # 1, and Reynaldo de la Paz (two-run single) and Luis Marinez (RBI double) stroked consecutive run scoring hits to highlight a three-run 8th, as the ACL Athletics (no hit for the first five innings) rallied to defeat the ACL Cubs 7-2 on Field # 2, in Cactus League Minor League Spring Training game action Friday afternoon at the Lew Wolff Training Complex at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

Jacob Wetzel smacked a solo HR for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in a losing cause.

Five of the pitchers who threw for the Cubs in the two games (Gray, Watkins, Cabrera, A. Hernandez and J. Romero) were temporarily moved-down from the South Bend Cubs group so that they could get their scheduled work.

21-year old 6'5 RHP (ex-1B) Francis Reynoso continues to impress with his high velo FB / hard SL combo. He just arrived from the Cubs Dominican Academy a couple of weeks ago and is presently assigned to the Mesa (ACL Cubs) group at Minor League Camp, but given his stuff and his ability to command it, he could end up at South Bend by the end of the season (he also is Rule 5 Draft-eligible post-2024).    

As I have mentioned here previously, Reynoso was a first-baseman in the Cardinals organization 2021-22, and he struck out 83 times in just 213 PA between the DSL and the FCL before getting released in December 2022. Then the Cubs signed him last June and converted him to a RHP at their Dominican Academy, just like they did in 2021 with ex-SS Michael Arias after he was released by the Blue Jays.

lineup from 10 years ago...opening day...year 3 of theo intentionally crippling the team for draft pick gambles.

out of the 8 hitters 4 of them had no business being starters at this point in their careers.  nate had no business being a starter the year before, but earned his 2014 starting slot...which he regressed badly.

morel playing 3rd.  cooper DH.  nico leading off (lefty starter).

too early to speculate...nonetheless...looks like our 8m manager might be playing a better fielding 3rd baseman for the more ground-ball inclined pitchers (like steele).

So, I see where neither Carl Edwards or Dominic Smith have been picked up by other teams as I and others on here speculated they would. Both are now showing as past players on Baseball Reference and both feature a Last Game date in their profiles. I realize this isn’t a death knell for a career but it does feel ominous.

That got me to thinking about the reasoning behind turning down a minor league assignment at the end of spring training. Rosters are pretty well set by that time so the chances of being picked up would be pretty low. These guys are both relatively young (31 and 28) and both showed some signs of life in ST. By accepting a minor league assignment they might have been able to showcase themselves and demonstrate value sufficient for a team in need to trade for them.

So, what’s the psychology between turning down the minor league assignment? Are some veterans just too proud to accept it? Are they assuming that a big league team will come calling even though they’re out of the game and unable to demonstrate performance in the mlb-milb system? Are they kind of shrugging their shoulders and calling it a career? Maybe any or all of the above?

dom not having a job surprises me, but he's gotta be looking a team committed to giving him significant playing time or a team with sketchy lineup that he may be able to slide into after a little time in the minors.

as far as edwards goes, the league has been disrepecting his results his entire career.  yes, there's injury concerns, but there's a lot worse guys in his pay range getting steady work.

    through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

    on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.
