Nothing like two of the more storied franchises meeting each other to get the national media on it's high horse. I'll let them try and still grasp for some sort of story line that still links the two clubs. If this series was last year, I'm not sure I could bear to watch the coverage, but with last year's improbable Red Sox championship run, we're all spared a bit of the melodrama. Now to more important matters and the actual game in hand. Maddog versus Cornrows, I mean Bronson Arroyo. (Does he still have that ridiculous hairdo?). Maddux so far has escaped the first two innings without allowing a baserunner while Arroyo has given up 2 homers to Burnitz and Holly and the Cubs lead 3-0 in the bottom of the second. Dusty stacked the lineup with lefties today as as they are hitting .295 versus Arroyo this year compared to righties hitting only .170. Seems to be working so far..... I'm going to go enjoy the game and hope some of that good fortune the Red Sox enjoyed last year, rubs off on the Cubbies before they leave town.

Comments

Ramirez was on for Holly's homer - it's 3-0 Cubs! Happy Day!

Thanks, I was typing instead of paying attention the game..fixed.

Well, crap - now it's 3-1. Still, the Cubs are winning. And my ex-wife's favorite team is losing.

Taking Arroyo out? Dang. Good to see Burnitz & Aramis hitting like that. Going to make pitcher think a little better about pitching junk to Lee. I think he'll start seeing some quality pitches. ryno

Go Dad!

They're really laying it on. Everyone's got a hit. Jacos - Wrong ryno. :)

Don't look now...but Barrett is hitting .305! And Ramirez is up to .280! He was hitting .226 on may 26th. This is the Cubs team that we were expecting.

Ok, everyone except Maddux has at least 2 hits now. They're really laying it on. That's good though, no lead is too big to have on Boston with their potent offense. Jacos- Wrong ryno.

infield of macias, perez, hairston, and wilson. wow thats scary

I hate to quibble during a win, but why are Wuertz and Ohman - our two best set up guys - working in a mop up game when Remmy or JoBo would do just fine?

I think its safe to say, the "guest conductor" program at Wrigley 'Stadium' either needs to stop or be retooled so actual cub fans are singing the stretch. Its one thing to have visiting team's broadcasters sign and say root-root-root for the road team - at least you can argue its still a tribute to harry - but having two bums from the NHL come in and do it is just insulting.

chelios is still loved in chicago and as for this series, it means nothing to me, i just want them to win.

Steve "Mongo" McMichael should sing in the stretch every game. That way we'll get all the umpire calls!

Chelios wasn't the problem... it was O'Callahan, who said "Root, root, root for the Red Sox." Chelios just laguhed and didn't say a thing... Absolutely pathetic. They need to think ahead - do they think a guy who went to college in Boston would be a Cubs fan? He came to the game wearing a Sox hat! Pathetic...

The best solution would be to let Ronny do the stretch... True blue Cubs fan, he'd get the fans fired up, and he'd NEVER call for rooting for the road team.

Hey guess what Cubs fans that live in Central Illinois. The Fox Network has decided that unless we live in Chicago, we are Cardinals fans, and thus this Saturday when everyone in Chicago will be watching Cubs vs Red Sox, the rest of us in Central Illinois will be treated to Cardinals vs Yankees. Why?? I have no clue, since St. Louis is in ANOTHER FRIGGIN STATE. Either way, if you live in the Central Illinois area and would like to complain about not being able to see Cubs vs Red Sox this Saturday at 2:15 PM, go here: http://wrsptv.com/contact.html

If you are in Illinois and they're going to show the Cardinal game tomorrow, Call your local FOX station. Fox stations pretty much get to pick the game they want to broadcast, based upon which they think will generate more sales revenue. But I'd act fast, since its Friday and most managers are probably on their way out the door already.

Who is the local Cubs affiliate in Champaign-Urbana? It's supposed to be 1460 in Rantoul, but they haven't been carrying the games lately. Emails to the station, and to the Cubs, have gone unanswered.

Trade front is warming up.... 2B Junior Spivey to Nationals P Tomo Ohka to Breweres Brewers also picked up Ryan Drese off waivers from Texas Odd trade for the Nationals, I know Vidro is injured but I didn't think he would be out much longer. I assume this opens up a spot for Rickie Weeks

Just got back from the game. A good time all around. Afterwards, Cubs and Red Sox fans joined voices in a "Yankees Suck!" chant. Kind of heartwarming.

ohka and frank robinson had problems, ohka wouldnt hand the ball to robinson when he took him out.

I guess the Boston fans wouldn't have been open to the customary "SOX SUCK" chant.

#17 - I thought he said Red Wings. I guess I don't know which team he doesn't play for. Also, Arroyo about facing Maddux says something abou thow he wanted to watch Maddux over harder throwers and because his stuff wasn't as good. Maybe the cornrows made him stupid. Or inarticulate. Did anyone else see this?

Uhhhhhh, the Chicago Bandits either. The first Cubs-Sox game, they said "Root, Root for Chicago." I don't care, if it's at Wrigley, it's for the Cubbies. And don't jinx the team by saying "Let's Get Some Runs" even if they are winning. Harry ONLY said that if they were losing.

How about "root root root for the CHAMPS?" Remember that one! Damn you Bernie Mac Damn you!!!!!!!!

Good for a laugh? Check out the stats so far this year for Sammy Sosa and Jerry Hairston Jr.

So who has the highest team batting average in the National League? Believe it or not, it's the Cubs (.276)!! The Cubs also lead in Slugging, Total Bases, and Homeruns (77) But, probably because they are dead last in walks, they rank only 7th in scoring. Not good.

So which pitching staff in the National League has given up the fewest hits? Has the best WHIP? The lowest OBA? Cubs, Cubs, Cubs

Who, against all odds, is in the lead for the wild card race?

.... Philly?

Dominance Because infield flies are caught 97% of the time, they are just about as certain an out as a strikeout. So I've created a stat that I call Dominance, which measures how often a pitcher induces either a strikeout or infield fly as a percent of batters faced. Here are the Dominance Leaders: Player Team IP ERA K IFFly Dom Martinez P. NYN 79.0 2.62 92 11 0.354 Santana J. MIN 83.3 3.67 105 8 0.348 Burnett A. FLA 68.0 2.91 64 21 0.309 Escobar K. LAA 36.3 2.97 43 3 0.305 Myers B. PHI 74.3 2.06 76 9 0.294 Prior M. CHN 58.3 2.93 62 7 0.292 Peavy J. SD 76.0 2.37 78 6 0.287 Vazquez J. ARI 74.0 3.65 67 19 0.282 Harang A. CIN 66.7 2.97 57 17 0.280 Clemens R. HOU 76.0 1.30 76 6 0.279 Fossum C. TB 40.7 3.54 40 9 0.275 Zambrano C. CHN 72.7 3.22 68 12 0.275 Sheets B. MIL 37.3 4.34 39 4 0.274 Perez O. PIT 53.3 6.92 51 15 0.266 Schmidt J. SF 51.3 5.08 49 14 0.265

haha, I LOVE having DirecTV Extra Innings, so the only games I miss are on that stupid WCIU station, and that only happens about 5 times year :D

Fye Fye Foto - Interesting group of pitchers produced by the dominance equation, made more enjoyable at least here that it excludes Randy Johnson. and I guess throw "Matty Mo" in there as well, hockey beard and all. Just back from the game myself and that's what I call fun at the old ballyard. We were in the left field bleachers and had a great view of the strikezone. If the Cubs get to a playoff series this season I want Doggie on the mound and no one else. He controlled that game like the old ninja master he is.

and also, it's been a husker's age since I've seen the ivy given such a workout..

*and* that's if the Cubs get to a 7th game of a playoff series this season... many beers at the game and two whiskeys on the southwest flight home....

Another solid outing by Jerome Williams for Iowa last night: 6.1 IP 7 H 2 R (1 ER) 0 BB 6 K 2 WP Gotta love those "no walks"!

Going to today's game.... Yesterday was AWESOME!!!!!!! Holly, Maddux!!!! In Dusty We Trusty!!!!!!!

Wow did the Cubs do a job on Friday kicking butt big time

Wow did The Cubs give Boston a but kicking on Friday

White Sox DFA Bailey Horn. I'm thinking the Cubs would love to get him back although they probably won't have a decent chance of claiming him without another swap.

WSox also call up former Cub Rafael Ortega (and additionally Tommy Pham). They are hurting and having a gawd awful April.

    White Sox DFA'd Bailey Horn.

He wasn't producing good results in Charlotte (AAA).

But Jed might bring him back with that open 40man spot. Then try the "sneak him thru waivers" gambit.

Oh my, now I will have nightmares of me sitting in the bowels of the Wrigley security detention cell.

    One more thing...

One of the reasons I come to this site...

...in addition to Arizona Phil, who is, as we all know, a treasure trove of well-written fresh information, honest evaluation, and sneaky-subtle humor regarding the entire Cub organization...

... is CubbyBlue and Tim's fantastic and timely visual takes on the Cubs (to be fair, he does have a much broader Chicago-flavored brush well beyond the Cubs).  Thanks for so many memorable images.  I am fortunate to own (one of my prize possessions) a print that I framed (55/200) of "The Last Out" with KB's shit-eating grin as he fields the series winning out of the 2016 WS.

Tim, will you visit me if I do the text security thingy and description: Tim S? Or will I find myself in a Cub detention cell.

i.e. "or send a text message to 773-839-**** with the keyword "Friendly" and include your seat location and a description of your issue.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

BAHAHA! I've actually not seen a single fight, but can't wait to see 70 degrees for sure!

next time i roll up into wrigley i'll try to start a fist fight and maybe we'll meet.

be prepared.  i'm gonna make you earn your money.

seriously, though...that's a cool as hell "retirement" assignment.  i imagine it will be better with warmer nights.
