Cubs vs. Reds: Darvish vs. Gray (Game 96)

Yu Darvish and the Cubs go for the series win in an afternoon finale. Darvish went six scoreless against the Pirates on Friday and remains winless at Wrigley. Derek Dietrich is 4-9 off of him and has tagged him for two homeruns. Jose Iglesias and Nick Senzel are 3-6 and 3-7 respectively.

Sonny Gray takes the mound for the Reds, coming off a 7-inning, 1-run performance in Denver that yielded him a no-decision. He earned a win against the Cubs on 6-28 with 6.1 innings pitched, two earned runs, and six strikeouts. Almora is 3-4 off of him with a homerun. Russell is 2-6 with a homer. Nobody else has more than one hit off of him.

Following a Thursday off-day, the Cubs will take on the Padres in a weekend set. It doesn't feel like it yet, but we are heading into peak hot-stove season. Teams have only until the end of the month to trade for players that will be eligible to appear on post-season rosters. The Cubs recently landed a defensive-minded third catcher, Martin Maldonado, opening up pinch-hit opportunities for Caratini or even potential OF starts for Contreras. There's not much else in the rumor mill with a Cubs' label on it.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs. no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count. ha.

and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.
