Rockies Edge Cubs at Salt River Fields

SP Bryan Perez hurled four innings of one hit / shutout ball and combined with three relievers on a four-hitter and Skyler Messinger drilled a two-run single to provide the runs, as the Rockies edged the Cubs 2-1 in Arizona Instructional League game action Friday morning on Dust Storm Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, east of Scottsdale, AZ. 

Reggie Preciado stroked a double and an RBI single for the Cubs. In twelve AZIL games since giving up switch-hitting and reinventing himself as a RH-hitter (only) with top-hand hard contact / pull-elevation, Preciado is hitting a robust 357/438/714 (1.152 OPS) over the course of 32 PA, with two HR, two doubles, and a triple, a 28% K-rate and a 9% walk-rate, and two SB (two CS), playing 3B, 2B, and SS (mostly 3B).

    Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).  

    Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.
