Cubs @ Marlins: Darvish vs. Richards (Game 15)

CHC (5-9): RHP Yu Darvish (0-2, 7.50 ERA)
MIA (4-12): RHP Trevor Richards (0-1, 2.00 ERA)
First pitch 6:10pmCDT

Management opts to skip Chatwood's spot start after the postponement, and Darvish takes the mound in Miami. He was a little bit better last time around, allowing 5 hits and 0 BBs n 5.1 IP. But he was tagged for 2 homeruns and the bullpen let him down. Did you know Curtis Granderson is still in the majors? At 38 years old and on his 16th major league season, Granderson is 1-12 against Darvish.

25-year-old righty Trevor Richards goes for Miami. He made 25 starts last year with 9.26 strikeouts and 3.85 walks per nine innings. He's sporting a low ERA here at the beginning of the season (2.00 to last year's 4.42), having given up only 10 hits in his 18 innings. Richards relies heavily on a changeup, which somewhat reduces the platoon advantage. Everyone but Daniel Descalso (0-1) starts with a clean slate against him.

for those that havent seen the updates they've made to the park @MIA, it no longer looks like a tacky discount aquatic theme park from 1985.

LAA game rescheduled for June 3 at Wrigley. LAA goes from Seattle to Chicago for 1 game and then back to LA. Good for them!

they should have played.

snow games are pointless, awful, and fun.

I've never seen that... fantastic!  Or they could do an MLB fog bowl game... that would be neat until somebody died due to blunt force trauma from the pitched/batted ball.

this MIA team is all kinds of assorted awful...i dunno how they've won 4 games so far.

darvish's night comes to an end after a long delay caused by a high-90s fastball HBP off the batter's thigh that then caught the ump in the throat.

5.2ip 4h 4bb 8k, 1 HBP, 2r/er

he could have easily finished the inning out given he had only thrown 96 pitches, but k.ryan was warm enough to come in anyway...and he gets a 3 pitch K.

btw, darvish's HBP wasn't retaliation for the 3 cubs HBP earlier in the game, nor was it treated that way by either team...MIA simply sucks that badly...

I think that caught more than Brinson's thigh.

truth...

there was a lot of action on that pitch.

Yes, lots of action on the pitch & no more action for Brinson... HIYO!!!

neat.

that said, he did epic horrible this winter (7+ ERA/2+ whip) on part 1 of his latest comeback so i wouldn't expect to see this go anywhere.

  • As long as you're one of the faster gazelles, it's probably ok!

It's better to be the cheetah in that scenario.

  • Hey Phil, I saw where the Cubs recently traded for some additional international pool money. Have they made any recent signings of note?

  • He had no trouble logging SBs last summer, per the game logs. If he can hit a little bit.........

  • TIM: If you've never seen him, Rochest Cruz is a wiry and - VERY - fast second-baseman who looks like he's about 12 years old.

He takes a lot of pitches and has a sort of slashing approach at the plate when he does swing (he pulled the 5th inning triple into the RF corner and it could have been an inside-the-park HR if the third base coach hadn't stopped him at 3rd because there was only one out).

He is a very unusual player. Kind of like Fernando Kelli on uppers.

  • SONICWIND: If you disregard the affect it would have on club payroll (slight) and the player's minor league option years (substantial) and how it might impact the Cubs MLB 40-man roster later in the season (TBD), the actual best temporary replacement for David Bote for the two or three days he's on Paternity Leave who might enhance their chances to win would probably be Trent Giambrone, but I would be surprised if the Cubs were to add Giambrone to the 25 (and the 40) right now.

  • Rochest Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz.

He was fun to follow through the DSL last season.

  • I hope the Cubs' financial situation isn't so dire that worrying about saving $25k is going to factor on what player they can call up that would best enhance their chances to win.

  • Fair call, and educational, as usual.

    We shall see.

  • Remember that when a minor league player with no previous MLB 40-man roster time is added to the 40 during the 2019 season, his minor league split salary is fixed at $45,300 for his first season on the 40, so if a player like Machin was to get a brief ride on the 25, it would require placing him on the 40 to do that, and once he is added to the 40 -- even if he is outrighted back to the minors after three days in Chicago -- his 2019 minor league salary would jump from about $18,000 (where it is now ) to $45,300, and I doubt that the Cubs would do that if they can just recall a player (Happ
