Cubs @ White Sox: Series Thread (Games 89 and 90)

The Cubs offense put up eleven runs, Quintana went seven innings for the win, Joe Maddon got himself tossed, and Robel Garcia was a double short of the cycle in first MLB start. Lucky for the Cubs, they won't need to top that performance to send fans to the All-Star break happy--a couple of wins would do! The Cubs split a two-game set at Wrigley with the Sox last month. Since their last matchup, the White Sox have not significantly improved. The Cubs, on the other hand, have had the 8th worst ERA- in those few weeks--just ahead of the White Sox at 9th. See the matchups below.

Game 89, Saturday, July 7, first pitch 6:15pmCDT
CHC: LHP Jon Lester (7-6, 3.89 ERA)
CHW: RHP Lucas Giolito (11-2, 2.72 ERA)

Lester earned a win over Giolito on June 19. In two starts since then, Lester has gone 1-1 allowing 6 runs, only three earned, over 11.2 innings. He struck out 15 in that time. The White Sox have a slightly below average offense overall, but they are 9th in the majors in wRC+ against lefties. Jose Abreu is 6-18 with a homerun off of him.

Giolito has gone 1-0 in two starts since being served his second 2019 loss by the Cubs. He allowed three earned runs in 10.2 innings of work, striking out 11. The Cubs are ninth in the majors with a 106 wRC+ against righties. Contreras is 2-7 with two homeruns off of him. Bote is 2-5 and Javy 3-8, each with a homer of their own. Bryant is 1-9 with four strikeouts.

Game 90, Sunday, July 8, first pitch 1:10pmCDT
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (7-6, 3.45 ERA)
CHW: RHP Ivan Nova (3-7, 5.92 ERA)

Hendricks's last start was shortened by rain, but he appeared to be healthy after missing two weeks with shoulder impingement. He allowed two earned runs and struck out four in three innings, getting pinned with the loss. Jose Abreu is 6-12 off of him and Yolmer Sanchez is 5-11.

Ivan Nova was effective against the Cubs last month, going five innings and allowing one earned run to earn the win. Since then, he went back to the suffering that has been characteristic of his 2019; he lost both starts, allowing nine runs, seven earned, in twelve innings. Willson is 5-11 off of him, Heyward is is 9-24 with a homerun, and Schwarber is 4-16 with two homeruns and three walks.

This Friday off-day is freaking me out... not natural.  I'm glad that the MLB schedule makers in their inifnite wisdom crammed more games into Sept & NOT on the day that 1/2 of America is taking off work... three days before the all-star break. On the plus side, the weird off day, 2 game "road trip", & post ASB homestand means that the Cubs will get more than two weeks in their own beds in the middle of the season.

Don't look now, but the I-Cubs have an 11-game divisonal lead & the Memphis branch of Redbirds is in the basement after last night's walkoff win in front of a capacity holiday crowd that included presidential wannabes Biden & Beto. Last year the I-Cubs went 0-8 @ home vs. Memphis & 2-14 overall.

I Cubs are kicking butt.

Duane Underwood Jr last five outings as multi-inning RP at Iowa: 9.0 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K

If you are going to throw Javy a slider, it better be in the dirt.

Sorry to hear about Hannemann being released. Met him once, nice guy.

One billion pitches for the WSux pitchers here in the top 5th. Lido left at 87 pitches...

Next stop Chi town, Lido put the money down, let 'em roll

c.kimbrel vs a 3 run lead.

k, hbp, k, walk, k

cubs win and take control of 1st place.

I am unhappily remembering that even when you have an elite closer you still feel closer drama. I will immediately forget this as soon as the Cubs don't have an elite closer again.

Javy vs. Verlander was entertaining.

verlander reminding the world he's got one of the best curveballs in the game, and the game's history.

Apparently Cubs were approached by Rizzo's agent about an extension. They told him it wasn't happening.

Cubs organization is performing a master class in how to burn good will among fans!

jdlym: The contract Brad Brach signed with the Mets includes a $850K base salary for 2020, a $1.25M club option for 2021, $400K in potential performance bonuses in 2020, potentially $2.25M in 2021 salary accelerators, and $500K in potential performance bonuses in 2021, so ordinarily the Cubs salary obligation to Brach would be the difference between Brach's new 2020 base salary ($850K) and what would have been his 2020 player option salary ($1.35M) if he hadn't been released by the Cubs.

Hey AZPhil, when a player is released with money/years still remaining on his contract, does his next team *have* to give him the prorated major league minimum or can they offer more (meaning the original club owes less) to "outbid" other teams that may have had interest? I'm assuming that's what happened with Brad Brach, where the Mets signed him for 2020 at $850,000.

as awesome as bryant is, it would probably be good for the cubs to find him a new home before his play at 3rd turns him into a corner OF'r...which seems inevitable sooner than later.

i'm still impressed how much his D improved since he was drafted, but he's already losing a step at the position early in his career.

minor league ballplayers will no longer have to worry about getting suspended for testing positive for weed...it's off the prohibited substances list.

3B Alec Bohm and RHSP Spencer Howard would likely be the Cubs asking price and the Phils probably say no, but if they don't say no, that could be a deal.

    Bruce Levine @MLBBruceLevine
Cubs have had talks with Phils on Bryant. Nothing there at the moment. Service time grievance still an issue.

Humerous 30 minutes this morning when both Mark Gonzalez and Gordon Wittenmyer tweeted out that the Cubs would be receiving Conor Lillis-White as the PTBNL in the Tommy La Stella trade as if it were just now happening.

things that are important to good on-field play like buying up all the property around wrigley field, from rooftops to acerage, isn't going to monetize itself.

i know some people would love to have a top tier pitcher, but i'm looking forward to more control of rooftop advertising and an open air beer garden near the team owned hotel and resturant complexes.

i know some people want a solid leadoff man, but i'm looking forward to seeing 10-20 concerts on off-days destroying the playing field so that extra revenue can help a polician in Nebraska or Iowa get some ad buys.

remember when the billionaire owners got a huge double digit tax cut?

maybe the city should do them a favor and give them more tax savings help to let them buy and build another 2-3 revenue projects outside of the park.  that might help these struggling heroes find some extra loot.

i know this rant isn't fair, but my "dan winkler got a MLB contract fever" is dying down a bit.

f'real.  i don't even know why they're going to bother playing games.  i'm over here printing Cubs 2020 World Series Champs banners while others are sleeping on reality.
