The Cubs are one loss from dropping out of first place behind the Cardinals and into a second place tie with the Brewers. A loss would also give the Cubs their first real losing streak of the season (I start counting at three) and they'd lose a second consecutive series to their main competition for the Central crown. So yeah, today would certainly be a nice day for a win.

Dempster will take to the mound to try and help accomplish that and he did start the one lone victory in the opening series. We'lll happily take another six inning, two walk, five strikeout, one earned run performance if you have it in you. He hasn't had a lot of experience versus the members of the current Brewers (possibly the reason for his last success), but do watch out for Jason Kendall who's 13 for 28 versus Dempster for a 464/583/536 line.

I also just wanted to mention that today is the last day of April, so your last chance to contribute to our donation drive. Geez -- another concerning outing for Howry. The bullpen is Marmol, Wood and not much else right now -- Howry, Wuertz, and Hart looking very shaky. Marshall and Lieber not really relievers. How long until Lou wants some fresh arms out there? Oh -- and Geo Soto? We always loved you. Liking Cedeno more and more.....

I have to say Ronny continues to impress and it seems he turned a corner. His patience is so much better tonight when compared to previous years. Maybe this kid gets it now? good to see soto get on track, missed the ABs, were they fast balls? how was he being pitched?

Yeah, Theriot's .323 .396 .434 in 112 PAs this year hasn't been good at all. Send that bum to AAA! Everyone seems to be of the mindset that Ronny Cedeno somehow has the ability to "turn the corner", but Theriot is destined to forever suck. Sure, he's not likely to stay that high all year, but 112 PAs is nothing to scoff at. He could easily end up at .290 .355 .410 this year (and before you say there's no way he'll make it to a .410 SLG, his career is .386 and there's no reason he can't improve that). If Ronny can show similar numbers, maybe with a slightly higher SLG I'd love to see them as the double-play combo (making about a combined $1 million).

Marmol in up 8? :( that I don't like I just hope he doesn't get hurt or anything. I guess Lou used up his pen in last nights bullpen mess. Our bullpen depth is definitely the April problem, but we are winning. Maybe these guys can do an 'Eyre' and turn it around as the season goes on.

Holy effing shit was that a debacle from Turnbow. I love to see the Cubs score runs, but I really felt bad for that guy. I was actually embarrassed for him. He's going to be having nightmares about that outing for a long time. In other news, that was awesome.

Interesting note on Soto, his 8 K's in a row vs. the Nationals was barely half way to the record of 15 shared by two guys - man, 15 in a row would be rough. This was a sweet game for me. Watching the Brewers broadcast last night was brutal. Tonight was much more fun seeing them struggle to find anything positive to talk about.

it was fun to see everybody reach base, including dempster. man this plate patience aint too bad. i think i like it. HOWEVER lilly, marquis and hill (and the shaky dempster that showed up today) are not the staff to take us to the top. we're short another stud or two. why does KC end up with the bannister and greinke stories? wtf? its nice to see the bats lively but man most of our staff and over half our pen is a big fat question mark. and THEN the summer months will take their toll on an already mediocre rotation. there's always next year though! whoo hoo! cubbies in 09!!!

We knew SP depth would be an issue going into the season. The team does not have a #2 starter - except it appears as if Demp is becoming one. It sure ain't Lilly yet. BUT - other than AZ, what NL team has even as much starting Pitching depth than the Cubs as of right now? We were screaming for even more runs at the game in the 8th. I had no pity for Turnbow. No pity for Gagne who has been very lucky to have 8 saves. And the cheerfully optimistic Brewers fans sitting above the Brewers dugout who stood up and cheered for Turnbow upon his exit, can go jump in Green Bay. One thing that will make the team better will be to put Lieber in the starting rotation.

I disagree. IF there was a reasonable long-relief alternative, other than Lieber, the team is better without Marquis, and with Lieber in his stead. I was at the game on Tuesday, 8 rows behind home. Marquis had zip. zero. nada. He couldn't finish off any batter with a 2-strike count. Perhaps it was an aberration, but if he has a couple more starts like that one soon, look for a change as I suggest. Perhaps it is greedy to expect more from a #5 starter, but Lieber out-pitched Marquis in ST. But Jason makes the coin.

22 K, 19 BB's for Dempster right now...he's not keeping up a 4-0 record and 3.16 ERA. Hill's the other big worry at 14K/14 BB. Marquis is the same Marquis he's always been.

Great game last night. That makes it 6-0 for me on the year. Unreal. I checked the games i've gone to, and the Cubs have outscored their opponents 65-14 in the six games i've gone to. Please mail me all of your tickets so i can keep the streak alive! ;) Interesting to see who gets sent down today with Soriano coming back. I agree with 10man, i think it'll be Mike "horses are hung like him" Fontenot. (Don't remember who said that last year, but kudos--it still makes me chuckle!)

    Childersb3: Miguel Cruz walked six in 1.2 IP in his last start, so I guess he is improving. Wilme Mora also walked six in one of his appearances a week or two ago, and one or two others have walked five. I don't know what would be the most I have ever seen a pitcher throw in a game out here, because the manager / pitching coach usually gets the pitcher out of the game if it gets too ridiculous. 

    As for the attendance, probably about 20 of the 25 were early arrivals for the Savannah Bananas game who came over to Field # 1 to see what was going on, and once they saw all the bases on balls (12 walks by Cubs pitchers and four by Angels pitchers) they ran away screaming. I'm used to it so it didn't bother me that much.

    Jed has added Teheran, Tyranski, Kissaki, and now Straily and Nico Zeglin today.

    Zeglin is 24 yrs old. Pitched well at Long Beach St in '23 and well in some Indy Ball.

    They also added Reilly and Viets in late ST.

    Have to search for MiLB arm depth anywhere you can and at all times!!!

    The great thing about going to live sports events is you don't know if you're going to see something historic. Today I went to the Cub game, after putting the liner back in my coat and fishing my Cubs knit hat out of the closet. I needed all that- my seats are in the upper deck, left, so the east wind was in my face. Both teams failed to capitalize on good situations, but both starters did a good job to accomplish this. So, we go to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs tie it up, and then Pete Crow-Armstrong comes up. We all know he would still be in AAA if not for injuries, and future Hall-of-Famer Justin Verlander absolutely carved up the young fellow up in his first two plate appearances. So this time he hits a fly ball. The wind was blowing in and had suppressed several strong fly balls- including a rocket off Altuve's bat that Canario hauled in (does anybody else remind me of Jorge Soler?) , but the ball kept carrying and carrying. 107mph, legit angle and carry. The crowd went nuts, the dugout went nuts. Maybe, just maybe, I saw the first homer from a long-term Cub.

    Which was my original premise. They won the trades but lost their souls. They no longer employ the Cardinal way which had been so successful for so long.

    STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.

    Natural cycle of baseball. Pitching makes adjustments in approach to counter a hot young rookie. Now it’s time for Busch and his coaches to counter those adjustments. Busch is very good and will figure it out, I think sooner than later.

    In 2020, the pandemic year and the year before they acquired Arenado, the Cardinals finished second and were a playoff team. Of the 12 batters with 100 plate appearances, 8 of them were home grown. Every member of the starting rotation (if you include Wainwright) and all but one of the significant relievers were home grown. While there have been a relative handful of very good trades interspersed which have been mentioned, player development had been their predominant pattern for decades - ever since I became an aware fan in the ‘70’s

    The Arenado deal was not a deal made out of dire need or desperation. It was a splashy, headline making deal for a perennial playoff team intended to be the one piece that brought the Cardinals from a very good team to a World Series contender. They have continued to wheel and deal and have been in a slide ever since. I stand by my supposition that that deal marked a notable turning point within the organization. They broke what had been a very successful formula for a very long time.
